In light of the bomb tragedy in BKK and the slight possibility that it's connected to the strife down south here.....it signals a new phase, a different tactic, of targeting foreigners mercilessly.

IF this is the case (and I do doubt it), what will you do if things get significantly more violent down here? Carry on as normal, hunker down, or leave?

For myself...I would probably carry on as normally as possible, but with a bit of a hunker down attitude.

When I was a kid growing up in the UK it was the IRA, when I lived in South Africa the ANC, now I live in Hat Yai it's the RKK.
Regardless of whatever terrorist group it's always been more dangerous getting in the car.

Life is all about risk, and it's all relative, trust me, bombs are the least of your worries.

On a note regarding the Bangkok bombing I quote the Royal Thai Army chief and deputy defence minister General Udomdej Sitabutr who said:

“This does not match with incidents in southern Thailand. The type of bomb used is also not in keeping with the south”

I agree with you, and I'm not too worried. I'm just pondering other local farangs thoughts IF this was a sea-change in how the insurgents are working. I don't believe it is, but IF it was....

Just looking at thoughts, is all.

I am not going anywhere, nor am I going to change my habits in any way. I couldn't agree more with Stocky that just getting into a car is inherently more dangerous than anything else (apart from a motorbike, of course)

I remember leaving Songkhla for Phuket a month after 9/11, although that wasn't a major factor in the move.

I still feel safer anywhere in the Deep South than I do when I go back to Phuket.

The thing I am really worried is restricted access to beer and other alcoholic beverages.

All the minimarts around here (the university strip on Kanjanawanich Road in Khaoroopchang Municipality) are selling off their stocks for the impending D-Day: Thursday. Most of them only have Chang left! What a nightmare.

So if you live anywhere around here the closest place outside the 300 meter limit is Tesco-Lotus, and they observe the retarded time restrictions.

It's understood that this only applies to colleges and universities, but this is also going to be a real economic back breaker to lots of shops in the area.

Anyway, getting back to the tragedy at hand, I would be totally surprised if the southern separatists had anything to do with it.
