BANGKOK: -- The haze problem in several southern provinces has eased substantially on Saturday with improved visibility and air quality.

In Hat Yai township, the amount of dust in the air was measured at 53 microgramme per cubic metre Saturday compared to 146 microgramme/cubic metre two days ago and more people were seen this morning going outdoor exercising or cycling.

Flights going in and out of Hat Yai international airport operate as normal which is completely different from the situation two days ago when several flights were delayed because of poor visibility as a result of haze caused by forest fire smoke from Indonesia’s Sumatra.

Mr Haleb Jehmarikan, director of the 16th zone environment office, said elsewhere in Yala, Narathiwat, Satun, Phuket and Surat Thani the amount of dust in the air was measured at between 40-70 microgramme/cubic metre.

However, he said his environment office would continue to keep track of the haze problem for a few more days. He disclosed that the number of hot spots in Sumatra had dropped to 50 from 111 on Friday.
