Bt120m for victims of 2013-14 unrest
THE NATION

THE Cabinet agreed yesterday to allocate Bt120 million to help victims of political upheaval from 2013 to 2014.

BANGKOK: -- The decision came when Cabinet met to consider use of the 2015 annual budget to help aid people in emergency situations.

Victims will be eligible for the following assistance: Bt400,000 would be given to families of people who lost their lives; in cases of injuries and the need for people to get rehabilitation, victims could get up to Bt400,000; those left physically handicapped would receive Bt200,000; those seriously injured but not physically handicapped would receive Bt100,000, while those who sustained minor injuries could get up to Bt60,000.

Other assistance provided to victims and their families includes education funding for children whose parents were killed in political violence.

862 people affected

There are a total of 862 people who were affected by political unrest in 2013 and 2014. Twenty people lost their lives and 834 suffered from injuries of varying degrees.

As for remaining cases from political unrest from 2005 till 2010, the Cabinet decided to suspend consideration of remaining cases not fully compensated until the National Anti-Corruption Commission finishes an investigation into such matters.

What price a life? 120 million among the 862 people affected, including the princely sum of 400,000 for the families of those killed. The Yingluck government came up with a figure of 3.25 million in compensation for those killed between 2005-2010, which is being investigated by the NACC because the program was allegedly rigged in favor the red shirts. She may not have got much right, but I have to agree that this is a far more realistic amount for families who lose a bread-winner.
