I saw this in a Mexican newspaper: no mention of inverter, and it hits 50c occasionally in Hermosillo.

Prices in THB would be 12,000 btu=9900 thb 18,000 btu=15,092 thb and 24,000 btu=18,761

There is clearly some profitability in these things.

dear Sir,

1 ton equals 12,000 btu and the price of $ 4,590 for a 3ton unit (36,000 btu) applies obviously to a central air "block unit" as shown on the right side of the ad and includes most probably installation of ducts as well as ceiling outlets.

those are Mexican Pesos....I tried to make it clear enough for everyone to understand, but there are always a few.......

i know that the dollar sign is often used for pesos but a price of MXN 4,950 = USD 300 for a 36,000 btu unit is impossible. that goes even for an old ad, from years ago when MXN was much stronger.

but whatever the actual price was/is your btu comparison is wrong.

No, you are blind. It looks a little bit like a three, but it is a "1," followed by a "1.5," then a "2." I saw the entire ad that supports this. Would a 3 really be less than a 2?

Here is the complete ad....4590 MXN for a 1 ton....ask your Filipino mother to read it to you. BTW, this is today's paper. http://loseconomicos.elimparcial.com/clasificados/htmls/14092015/DESDE-HOY-MINI-SPLIT-4590---PRECIO-INSTALADO-8492663.html

i concede defeat and admit that you must be correct because the ad must have been read to you by your Congolese mother.

To the OP

A NEW a/c will reduce the bills a lot over an old one.

Tales of saving between inverter and regular are likely to be much more modest.

agreed. Opening your windows on a cool night will save you a lot more than running a very expensive unit, when it isn't needed, and will shorten it's life, too.
