One for the Ford;

The all-new Ford Ranger apparently isn't just one strong and tough pickup truck, it's fuel efficient as well. This was proven by Ford Thailand in a test drive that was independently observed and verified by a respected academic from King Mongkut's University of Technology.

Using two Ford Rangers--an open-cab 2.2-liter XLT 4x2 and a double-cab 2.2 XLT Hi-rider model that are both equipped with a six-speed manual transmission--driven by four members of Thailand's motoring media, the trucks were driven from Bangkok to the town of Pattalung in southern Thailand and then back to Bangkok.

With Saiprasit Koetniyom, a respected professor from the Sirindhorn Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering at King Mongkut's University of Technology, overseeing the entire test drive, the gas tank of the two all-new Rangers were sealed shut in Bangkok at the start of the trip. The trucks' air-conditioning system was also set at the second lowest fan speed and sealed for the duration of the drive. The tire pressure was set at eco-mode as stated in the user manual. The participants were also required to drive at a minimum average speed of 70kph in a route that involved public highways and city streets in downtown Suratthani and Chomporn provinces.

At the end of the drive, the open-cab Ranger 2.2L XLT 4x2 covered 1,673 kilometers on a single tank of diesel or ran an exceptional average of 19.47 kilometers-per-liter fuel mileage.

My 2011 Ranger has no gizmos, unless you count the dash cam that I installed but it's got 106,000 trouble free kms on the clock smile.png

3.5 years out of the original battery and still on the original boots...

Drives like a boss...

Does it have a V8.? giggle.gif

Everybody should have a V8 biggrin.png

I just bought one on the last top spec. Vigo champs still around. Reason? 100,000 baht discount, so 900k as opposed to 1.15m for top end Revo. Toyota have made millions of the last generation over the last 10 years so all glitches should be history. The vigo only has 2 airbags as opposed to 10 and lacks some of the other 'advanced safety features'on the Revo. Also it looks and feels like a truck rather than a car, which is what I want my trick to feel like. Most importantly I had my last Toyota Sport Cruiser 13 years and 180k. It nevet let me down once in that time.

As noted in my first reply in this thread - if I had the choice, it'd be a Ford F150 - which is still available with a 5.0L 390HP/525Nm V8 in the USA. The next best pickup engine we can actually buy here is the Ford 3.2L 5-pot diesel (200HP/470Nm), so let's just all agree for change :P

Yep, the Vigo has had enough recalls to now be pretty well sorted. It's a pretty average drive compared to the new generation though.

I would not want to break down only to be told that the nearest dealer is 300 miles away and will need several weeks to get parts anyway.

In that case, you've only eliminated the 2M Baht Volkswagen Amarok - every other pickup brand has at least one dealer per province - even Chev - so impossible you'd ever be that far away from one.

OK, maybe they have 300 miles covered, but how far is it between the two most distant dealerships of the less common brands, I wonder? I quite like the idea of having at least one dealership in every medium-sized town, which all the top three brands seem to offer.

And my comment about parts availability still stands.

It sounds like you've had a bad run f luck somewhere along the line... Most (and by most, I do mean the vast majority) car owners only go to see their dealership for routine servicing.. But yes, if you're upcountry somewhere an Amarok might be a bad choice, unless you has some other reason to visit BKK twice a year.

Pickup trucks and operating system releases have much in common, personally I don't want either until they're proven.

Buy a Toyota or Isuzu and enjoy your Windows 3.1 experience.

3.1 is just fine, if all you had before was an abacus, not everybody wants to be constantly on the bleeding edge. too many problems.

Bleeding edge is right, I'd slash my wrists before ever using a Microsoft product again. So many good and free Linux-based operating systems - and they don't attract the hackers writing viruses for magnets like Internet Explorer. Apologies for drifting off topic.

I am interested in buying a new pickup, but not sure why I have to spend a million, when the entry models can be had for mid 400s? I can live without auto gears and I don't plan on running a taxi service, so a single cab would be fine.

I'm sure a number of trucks from a variety of manufacturers would meet your needs. For me, wanted a truck that was more car-like and had up-to-date safety features to protect my wife and son from the multitude of retards who fill the roads in Chiang Mai. Edited by JaseTheBass

New Vigo is about 100k more expensive than competitors for similar level of equipment. Out

With a Ford you seem to have a non negligible chance to get a non functioning vehicle. In that case you are f***ed because Ford will do anything in their power to not help you. Even if the truck is great, it's not worth the risk. Out

Isuzu and Mazda are a bit ageing. Out

Chevrolet and Tata. Out obviously.

New Navara is the best looking by far. Inside is not too shabby either. But I heard its motor is a bit noisy and thirsty.

New Triton looks quite weird, almost ugly. Its interior is among the best on the other hand. Its new motor is supposed to be great.

So I would need some good test driving to choose between the last two.

Quite frankly, I have been frugal all of my working life. I was frugal so I could afford to retire and enjoy some of the luxuries that life has to offer. Now I am retired and can afford those luxuries. The new Isuzu I have ordered has all the bells and whistles. I deserve them. A hearse has no luggage racks so why not buy now what you enjoy.

Toyota.

If you have any sense. mfr_closed1.gif

an all new pickup with all new engine/drivetrain.....

If you had any sense you would wait a year or 2 to see how reliable/bad they are.... Toyota owns a large share of "ohh that is crap" when a new model is release.... takes them about 10 years to make it reliable.

It'll be right.

Even Jeremy Clarkson couldn't kill a Toyota Hilux.

If I would buy a new car I would never buy anything with less then 6 gear automatic.

We are talking high torque at low RPM diesel engined pickups here, not low torque benzine rides...

I guess you don´t own a pickup with 6 gears?

Huge different compared to drive a 5 gear, I know coz I had both.

My 6 gear pickup runs in 120 at 2000 rpm, the thing with diesel is that you don´t want it to run on high rpm coz you aint got any power there, so the more gears the better it is.

The new Pajero comes with an 8 gear automatic.. Diesel..

What do you know about Chevrolet made in thailand more then you heard around the stone table?

I had a Chev Colorado for 3years know and never had any problem with it and it´s a comfy drive and a lot cheaper to buy then Toyota, Izuzu etc.

If I would buy a new car now it would be the new Pajero coz all the new high tec but there is nothing wrong with Chevy made in thailand, it´s not a shabby us made..

If you live in a city, more gears would likely be better. Out here in the boonies most driving is done in high gear so extra gears mean very little or nothing. I don't even know how many gears my automatic Ford Focus has. I just know that from a dead stop to highway speed is smooth. It certainly is not a powerhouse.
