vine-ripened tomatoes

Featured Replies

unable to find nice, ripe tomatoes (red, not orange). Soft and juicy, not crunchy, like apples.

Is there a Farmer's Market or supplier in the area that has such tomatoes?

Thanks!

In my experience here, not only does no farmer's market have them, Thailand does not have them. It evidently is just too hot.

Hmmmm. you may be right about hot weather. but can tomatoes thrive in the Cool Season, or in the mountains? perhaps there's a local Hill Tribe Farmers Market (?)

The nearest thing you will get to vine ripened Tomatoes, especially this

time of the year, are EAT ME (or is it BUY ME), anyway you will find

them in Rimping supermarkets also TOPS,

They have small size on the vine, and big ones not on vine.

they also taste like tomatoes, which most of the other ones

found in markets,at least this time of the year do not.

regards Worgeordie

Rimping have them and they are good but fairly costly. Tops also have them from time to time but you have to be lucky enough to be there when they have them.

Big juicy tomatos will not "set" in Thailand even in the best season (now or coming up), even in the north, even in protected greenhouse environments. The major thing missing is the difference between daytime highs and nightime lows. You can bring the seeds here and baby the plants until you have healthy adults, but you won't get a crop. That said, the tastiest tomatoes I have eaten anywhere are the tiny tomatoes here that are about the size of a pea. I saw about five plants at Kamtiang and bought all of them. Will post a picture.

I have grown very good tomatoes in the Wang Muang area for several years. Seedlings in the ground by 1 October and GOOD vine ripe tomatoes by New Year. Seeds from the U.S. I have had good solid tomatoes as large as 600gms.

That being said, my crop was a complete failure last year. Some unknown disease got to my plants.

Going to try growing some in straw bales this year.

Main thing, if you get fruit on the vine, DO NOT pick until they are ripe. Too many people get in a big hurry. I end up wasting some by not picking them in time.

tomatoes won't "set"?

please elaborate. this is the first i have heard of this, and I am interested to learn more.

i always find good and ripe red ones on any local market.

Mostly the Thai people wont take them because they can not keep them for so long.
