wonder what Fabricus' previous incarnation was before banning or maybe fabricus is a sock puppet account for one of the current trolls

Possibly was and may still be a big pale warrior perhaps or a ''polished poster.whistling.gif

So Fabricus, you talk about over the years but you have only been a ThaiVisa member for just over a month.

Are you just another long term lurker who has had nothing interesting to add over the years or should the name Fabricus be changed to Fabrication.

What is your main posting name on this board?

Please do tell about the most recent attempt to clone ThaiVisa instead of prattling on in nonsensical sentences.

I wonder what Fabricus' previous incarnation was before banning or maybe fabricus is a sock puppet account for one of the current trolls

Oddly he always seem to turn up when the rest of the 'pikey' clique show up doing their dirty work calling out other posters 'pasts'....I think his current troll handle rhymes with 'Bear I am' but as they aren't so brave, I reckon all this will soon vanish as they cane the 'report' button.

Maybe they are all showing each other their imaginary Lancaster Gate property portfolios....cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif while imagining their Soi LBS grindhouses are in Thong Lor and their toothless 10$ Viet Beach BJ specialist GFs are HiSo former Miss Thailand contenders....

The reasons for its success are the same reasons for the failures of other sites who tried to compete (so far).

- herculean effort by founder(s) and participants to share their knowledge, have a laugh, and build a community

- having stuck around long enough it has become a source of knowledge for topics of interest and use to a large number of people

- with such an audience they are able to monetize and ensure longevity

- having successfully managed (navigated) the difficult phases of start up, staying up, and systematizing functions. these phases are all very different and require very different skills

Tip of the hat to TV

ThaiVisa is successful becomes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

There are so many "unsuccessful" members, who are, at best, mediocre people (myself included.) However, it is the entertainment value of these marginal individuals, who fight, squabble and whinge....that make thaivisa so successful.

Groucho Marx would never have joined ThaiVisa..as his thoughts were:

"I would never belong to any club that would have me as a member".

Advice that many of us should have followed.

Better marketing than the rest and timely delivery on promises may not guarantee anything, but it beats the crap out of whatever is in 2nd place!

Successful? A bunch of Grumphy old farts bashing Thailand on a daily basis, what could be more successful?

The bunch bashing the Grumpy old farts seems to be larger these days. It's this perpetual bashing fest that has made TV popular. In real life there would be dead bodies on the ground by now.

I keep saying I'm never going to bother with ThaiVisa again but the reality is this forum is a great source of information.

Thanks to all the Mods and thanks to people like ubonjoe (and many others although I'm useless at remembering people's handles)

It's the people on here of course !

I'm not sure about the "of course". What's obvious to you and I may be less so to others.

I spent a bit of time recently browsing one of the ThaiVisa clones and was shocked by how often I saw perfect examples of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

If you're not familiar with the Dunning-Kruger effect, here is a link to the original paper. It was published by Cornell University in 1999.

http://psych.colorado.edu/~vanboven/teaching/p7536_heurbias/p7536_readings/kruger_dunning.pdf

The findings have been interpreted as "Why people fail to recognize their own incompetence" and "Stupid people have no idea how stupid they are".

TV was also the first non sex, practical info providing forum for expats, when the pervy sites had a quiet page or two of practical info for expats, TV provided a shedload of info about visas and practicalities (or hassles) of expat life in general etc.

It also provided a soundboard for gripes too from the less than happy folks around.

You seem rather obsessed about these 'clones' even going to the lengths of creating an OP and a fake handle to bring out your gripes against them. Been left out of the fantasist' gang have you? As I thought they'd have been along by now rattling on about 'old men'?

Because we love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and we love the mods ! I do anyway smile.png

Should all of us armchair editors stand up and take a bow now? We keep it lively and interesting. We try to be civil but that at times fail. We like each other in rather a gruff manner correct each other when we feel the need arises. We try to do a one upmanship on the other fellow and well its do unto others as they do unto you. From the different answers to threads on here it shows our diversity in culture and thinking. Myself I try to stay away from a "shootout" with another poster. Brains baffles BS every time. Yes we love the mods they keep us in line but then they also give us a lot of leeway. New words that I have never used in years pop into my head and I do a Google polish on them and then use them in a sentence. I guess you could say that Thai visa is a senior education system for those of us that do not know it all but are willing to learn. Learning is the cornerstone of life and without it our house would crumble.

So well said,......!

Google "Worth of the Web".

Paste in Thaivisa to their search function.

Last time I looked it was estimated worth $2 million USD.

-----------------

Different "site valuation calculators" give very diffenrent numbers - from as little as $175,000 to as much as $60 mln. LOL.

I only went on Tv in April to enquire as to what I needed to do to get a new passport. Been looking on here every day since as this is now my Daily News. Oh one thing I haven't sorted is how to do the O P thing. Photos I can cope with.

There's a lot of first class information available on TV, stuff that's already there and questions usually get answered one way or another when asked. There is of course also a lot of good and not so goodhearted banter that goes on, but overall I think it's a pretty good place to spend some time whatever your needs/reasons etc. I did look a few times at another 'orange coloured' forum that came into play several months ago and initially it showed promise. However, it soon became a forum of 'silliness' which made it nigh on impossible to get a good conversation going. I'm not in favour of too much moderation and I think there have been times when TV forum has been over sensitive, but looking at the other place it seems that when there is practically none, then people just write silly, childish, crude and obnoxious things, just because they can.

Because other start up forums ( no names mentioned) seem to be totally run by a small clique of posters- whose usernames usually included 'dog' .

This forum is very gay friendly which is good - the mods see to that . It encompasses a whole range of people with very different lifestyles- living in Sin city, an Isaan village, Bangkok, a vast mansion, a small studio , gay, straight, in between , living with a ladyboy.

Generally everybody accepts that everyone is different ( apart from the 99baht breakfast brigade ) .

It's a stunngly good source of information from how to deal with termites to the latest visa information- I wonder what happened to the chap trying to start a vanilla pod farm?

It's not bad

And I really like Jingthing and his restaurant thread!

I must admit I had a quick look at the "door" one once out of curiosity. Frankly I couldn't make head nor tail of it. And that was just the front page. Is is not very eyeball friendly.

I joined TV in early 2002 to get some info on visas and living in Thailand, as I was planning to retired and could not stay in the USA on my pension.

They were able to steer me in the right direction and were very helpful.

I came over for a 6 month trial and, very quickly, realized that Thailand was a great choice.

Found a nice apartment, a girl friend and great medical and dental care.

Went back home to take care of things and returned in 3 months.

Unfortunately, I stopped reading TV and didn't know about Thaksin.

When I landed in July, 2003 I knew IMMEDIENTLY that something was wrong.

I keept asking the taxie driver is something was wrong here but he ignored me.

I continued with my question and asked if I would like him to change the radio station.

He finally acknowledge the problem and said oh, do you me Thaksin?

I started emiling friends & relatives back home telling them not to come here.

By 2005, he was still alive and I could see big trouble comming.

He blocked me having an internet account so, went back home to wait it out.

It took 10 years but have returned and renewed my membership with TV.

As many members have already said, this site helpful and appreciated.

I do rant a bit about text speak-u, coz etc and good for the mods - they backed me up last time - so another good thing about TV

However before you rant about a particular word- Google it- Oxford dictionary seems to think glom is perfectly OK
