BANGKOK: -- CONSTRUCTION firms have been hired to build the three major flood-prevention projects implemented by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and each project will take about four years, Adisak Kantee, BMA deputy permanent secretary, said.

A Bt2.4-billion project to build ferro-concrete dams and sluice gates at Klong Lat Phrao, Klong Bang Bua, Klong Thanon, Klong Song and Klong Bang Sue was given to River Engineering Co Ltd, he said. Construction should begin next month.

A Bt5.9-billion water drainage tunnel from Nong Bon Pond to the Chao Phraya River was awarded to Samprasit Co Ltd and Sino-Thai Pcl. The contract will be signed by month's end, he said.

A Bt1-billion project to build ferro-concrete dams in eastern Bangkok and walkways along Klong Saen Saeb and Klong Nakhon Neung Khet from Klong Saen Saeb to Suwinthawong Road was awarded to S-Tec Civil and Construction Co Ltd. That contract will also be signed by month's end.

Each project should take about four years to complete, he said.

Meanwhile, Kangwan Deesuwan, chief of the BMA's Drainage and Sewerage Department, yesterday warned officials to prepare for a major tropical rainstorm in the next few days. He said tropical rainstorm Vamco could cause flooding, especially at 22 hotspots, including Rajvithi Road, a section of Sri Ayudhaya Road near Phaya Thai Police Station, and parts of Chaeng Wattana Road.

In Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district, 200 migrant workers living at a building site were among those affected by a storm and flash flood on Monday night. The workers and their families in Tambon Nong Pla Lai were evacuated though torrents that swept away their belongings and destroyed some shacks. Bang Lamung district chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta visited the workers yesterday as they were cleaning up the site. Pattaya City and several roads in Bang Lamung were also inundated.

The Meteorological Department yesterday warned residents in Surin, Buri Ram, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachin Buri and Sa Kaew provinces of heavy rain and strong winds due to Vamco, while the National Disaster Warning Centre warned 14 provinces, including Chanthaburi, Trat, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani, about runoff and landslides today and tomorrow.

After four years and 9.3 billion baht, most of the money will be zoomed, the projects nowhere near completion, and Bangkok will still be relying on the same equipment shown in the photo.

I think the projects are now near the beginning smile.png

BMA to evict Lard Prao canal residents to build flood prevention wall end of October

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has set end of this year as the deadline for some 3,000 Lard Prao canal residents to move out as it will begin construction of the 2.4 billion baht and 22 kilometre long flood prevention wall end of next month.

BMA’s Department of Drainage and Sewerage (DDS) director Kangwan Deesuwan said the BMA has already employed a contracting firm to do the construction and expected to sign contract with it and to begin construction at the end of October.

He said as construction begins, all those 3,000 residents intruding the Lard Prao canal in eight districts must be evicted.

He said survey conducted by the BMA had shown that there are altogether 3,000 houses illegally built in the canal stretching over 20 kilometre long in eight districts comprising Huey Kwang, Jatujak, Laksi, Don Mueang, Samai, Lard Prao, Wang Thonglang and Bang Khen.

Participating in the survey and making understanding with the canal residents before the eviction begins included the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Treasury Department, and the National Housing Authority.

He said the eviction will be implemented in three patterns.

Houses which are not located on the line of the flood wall will be allowed to stay but need to be reorganised and regulated, while houses built in the canal must be demolished instantly.

The National Housing Authority has arranged 2,500 housing units for the evicted canal residents to live, he said.

He added that construction of the the flood prevention wall will begin end of next month and all intruders must leave by end of the year.

They cannot afford the $75 an hour plus benefits "professional" construction worker that the west employs. You know the ones that stand around with a full tool belt clean clothes that look like models on the front of Popular Mechanic magazine. The workers here seem willing but good guidance is lacking. Then there is the money that is skimmed off of the top. Which system is worse?

What happened to all the money allocated for flood prevention in 2011. The Rangsit canal barriers have been started, but not completed, but there are holes in the barrier you could drive a tank through.

Don't tell the Army, or they might just do that ! thumbsup.gif
