Almost a third of Americans would support a military coup

BANGKOK: -- Almost a third of Americans could imagine supporting a military coup against their own government which is beginning to violate the constitution, the Guardian newspaper online reported.

The YouGov survey showed that 29 per cent of Americans could imagine supporting a coup. Yet, 41 per cent said they could not imagine supporting such an event.

The online said YouGov, which conducts internet polls about "politics, public affairs, products, brands and other topics of general interest", surveyed 1,000 people online on the issue.

They found that 43 per cent of Republicans would support a military coup in certain instances, while only 20 per cent of Democrats and 29 percent of independents would.

The overall numbers increased when participants were "asked whether they would hypothetically support the military stepping in to take control from a civilian government which is beginning to violate the constitution". 43 per cent said yes to this, and 29 per cent said no.

That's interesting because I don't think most Americans really understand the concept of coups.

I think many of the people who said yes are thinking more revolutions of the people rising up vs. a typical military government coup.

Personally I am sympathetic to that idea ... that the people rising up should always be an option if government becomes too oppressive.

No, the question was pretty clear that it was about the military.

This was one among a series questions about attitudes towards the miliatary, police and politicians the one about the coup.

But this wasn't a random poll, either. It was an online poll in which respondents are self-selected.

I realize what the question was but I stand by what I posted.

Biden needs to get a good wig if he wants to compete with Trump. The US has high standards for elections.

The respondents mostly came from the NRA (gun owners and manufacturers) mailing list. They always respond to eveything controversial involving the government, while others are busy working or taking care of their families.

That is one of the criticisms of these kind of polls, but here "In an attempt to avoid selection bias, YouGov obtains responses from a panel of internet users and weighs the responses to be nationally representative.".

Anyway, be careful what you wish for.

I see a third of a trend. Only thing that scares me is that at no time did more than ten percent of the Germans belong to the National Socialist party, same percentage belonged to the Russian Communist party and China. It doesn't take all that many to rule, especially in a militaristic country.

I'm not sure where to start on the total absurdity of this post, or so called poll.

The idea that a minority of Americans would support a coup is ludicrous, let alone the military brass even contemplating it.

This comes from a report in a 'Newspaper' (I use that term with some irony) that does tries as best it can to deflect, obfuscate any rational criticism or discussion on the political reality of life in Thailand.
