Getting a trade-in for factory alloys on a new set?

Recommended Posts

I want to pimp my ride a little by replacing the factory alloys on my Mitsu Triton for something with a bit more zing. Both wheel outlets I've approached in Pattaya didn't want to take my old alloys as a trade-in because, understandably, they would only be bought by another Mitsu owner as they have a logo on them. I don't want to buy a new set of wheels and have the old ones (well, 10 months old) sitting around the house. Anyone traded in their wheels in Pattaya?

Your only hope is, I am afraid, a private sale. It is very unlikely that any alloy wheel dealer would be interested in them at any more than "scrap value". It is not so much that they have the Mitsu logo on them, as most wheel purchasers are going, like you, from factory to custom, and there is a very limited market for factory wheels. You might find a private buyer on the internet (using the "for sale" sites) with a Mitsu truck with beat up wheels that would be interested in them, but even there I wouldn't expect to get much for them -- assuming they are in very good condition, B4,000 to B5,000 may be the maximum for the set. Obviously, if you include the tires with the wheels as a set, you'll get more.

Thanks. I was hoping to put the old tyres (2500 klm) on a new set of wheels as they are near enough new. I'll try the For Sale section as you suggested, I'd be happy with 5000 baht, better than having them sitting around forever.

Of course the punters who want an origional unmolested vehicle are lost when you want to sell i'd keep the wheels and refit at sale time easier to sell your zingy wheels.

This is my last vehicle, it will only be sold after I'm ash, and who cares then?

I think that you would find them easier to sell complete ... also what idiot put that old fashioned balance weight on the outside of alloy rims ...

Where did you try to trade them ?

Was a few years ago but when I bought the missus a shopping trolley (Toyota Camry)I traded the wheels and tires for some new bigger alloys at siri-a-nan, they gave me 25k for the toyota ones (my total purchase was 80k so 55k cash plus wheels and tires)

I tried two places on Siam Country Club road. Where is Siri-a-nan?

Some dealers who sell new alloys will accept your wheels in a trade. I don't remember how much he allowed me for my wheels and tires (nearly new) but I would have remembered if it was a ridiculous price or a rip off.

A friend of mine has an old Isuzu for a second vehicle. He was looking for a deal like that where someone wanted to sell his OEM alloy wheels. He finally just bought a new set tires for his old steel wheels. He was able to find a set of wheels but there were no tires on them.

It sounds like you paid the dealer about B5,000 to take your old wheels off your hands. The best Michelin tires are about B5,000 per tire or B20,000 for the set. And a high quality set of 17" alloy wheels is under B30,000, so max B50,000 for the set of wheels and tires. Anyone will give you a ridiculous trade-in credit for your old stuff if you accept his inflated price on the new stuff -- this is an age old scam in the new car market, where dealers offer amazing trade-in prices on the old car, but the reality is that you get very little for your used trade-in. And the reality is that second hand factory rims have very little market value -- full stop.

So you are saying I paid 5k for a 25k discount and the benefit of not having to keep the old rims stacked at home in my lounge room.... sounds like a good deal to me.

How big can I go in wheel size without affecting the gear ratios, speedo, tacho etc? I only want to use normal tyres, not low profile or anything like that. The existing wheel size is 16 inch.

It's not exactly straight forward ... hopefully someone who has done it on your vehicle will advise as to what they did ... to understand the problem have a look here ... http://www.blackcircles.com/general/tyre-size-calculator you also need to ensure that the offset is correct.

Mr IMOH wrote something on offsets a while back but I can't recollect where at present. Here is some more info ...... http://www.willtheyfit.com/

Generally speaking if you fit larger diameter wheels and you want the same overall diameter then the tyre profile will be less.

Thanks. Might be simpler to stay with 16" wheels.

An option you may wish to consider...

Powder Coating... they may give your wheels a little more zing without paying for a new set of alloys.

I did consider that, but I don't know who does it. Also I was thinking black, but not all black, leave some silver highlights.
