I am thinking to buy a car but don't know much about the detail and what I should be consider?

I need a car which is not big and at least fit 4 people. I also want a car that will not consume a lot of petrol. Need to drive in town every day.

budget around 700,000 thb

Yeah, that was also my first thought, Mazda 2. Diesel is the way to go. Don't buy one of these small engine "eco cars". They can only create power through high revs, thus consumption goes up considerably and probably they wont last too long. Best to make a test drive. We did this with a number of these (Yaris, Swift, Almera etc.) which were all pretty disappointing and loud (Yaris particularly) and got a Sonic 1.6 in the end for my wife. No small Diesel cars that time.

Easy: Mazda 2 Diesel. Small, fits 4 people ok, goes for under 700,000 and consumes the least of all small cars in that category. Otherwise Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost.

Thank you. then what about honda HRV and nissan Juke I kinda like its design but don't know is it good?

Did your budget just grow to 809K to 1.045M Baht? that's what it's going to cost you to get into a Juke or HR-V...

If you still only want to spend 700K but like the idea of the compact SUV shape, have a look at the Ecosport: http://www.ford.co.th/en/suvs/ecosport

You could get a Juke secondhand for 700,000

the HRV are still to new. so new cost over 800,000 for the base model. !!

Well under your budget BRAND NEW.........

Those cars all feel like plastic toys that will fall apart

for 700k budget: honda fit or cities. Very good cars, better safety, much larger than the competition and good mileage. Also better resell value. Also the new model are really classy inside compared to the old ones.

Avoid the Vios, i have just rented the old and new model vios for 2 months while waiting for my new honda and it's total garbage.

2016 city inside:

Ecosport looks good on paper but when you sit into one, you hate it. Especialy if you try the ranger right before. Ranger is amazing but a bit above your budget

I still think the Fiesta is the best choice. It's nicer to drive than the Mazda 2 but Ford don't have a diesel version. The Ecosport is a bit of a disappointment. Cheap interior and the front seats are smaller than the Fiesta's. Otherwise I'd see if there is a 4 door truck available for around 700k.

for 700,000 baht a New Jazz is a more basic model 'V'. saying that the 'SV+' with all the options is 754,000 baht so not a lot over budget.

Not a lot more to get the New Honda Hybrid = even better fuel savings

The shitty vios im renting right now has forced eco mode on top of the shitty engine.

you either do 0-50 in 20seconds or press hard and it goes to 8000rpm and takes 10seconds anyways. It's awfully weak the rpm are never above 2000

The Vios has the 1.5l engine I thougt? Did only a testdrive on it's sister Yaris with 1.2l and if you say Vios is shitty, you haven't experienced the real thing :)

I don't even want to try the weaker engine. Im just saying. Stay away from low level car. Either get a sylphie/corrola+ and for budget cars go for honda city/jazz as they are immensely better for the price range than their competition.

Ive had 3 cities (rental and bought one) and they felt just as good as my elantra which should compare to the civic

Too small engine, that's one example of what I mentioned. 91hp out of 1.2l at 6000 rpm. That's not only *not* fuel saving but very loud and annoying. Stay away from these small petrol engines.

It is all about giving the OP options, the Suzuki is a lot bigger than a Mazda 2, Fiesta, Yaris, Swift, Almera etc, in fact it is bigger than a Honda City + almost 100,000 baht [top models] less than the City.. + Suzuki's here hold there value very well...

.Some people just want to get from A to B of course it would not be anything like my Audi A6, it has less than half the engine size..

Posted

Test drive it. That's the only way to get an answer. Bigger car with smaller engine does not really make it more attractive. But I don't know that model...

Again, we tried all the "eco cars" about 1 1/2 years ago and they were all, I mean all, disappointing.

Stay away from low level car ?

get a sylphie/corrola.. both way over OP's budget even with the lowest spec manual. NO ABS or Airbags... for that sort of money would get a Kia Rio with far higher spec

You also intimated that the 1.0L Fiesta was a small engine thus making you look clueless.

You probably mistake me for someone else. Can't remember to comment on a Fiesta.

We have an 1.6l Optra with LPG, first car we bought in TH second hand. It's a lousy performer, yet has space. Still have it, even rebuilt the engine after Madame managed to run it dry of oil. Used if we go somewhere with the dogs.

Wife has a 1.6l Sonic, result of the test drives with the eco cars. Goes quite well but uses way too much fuel for the size. She likes it and has done almost 50000km in 1 1/2 year with it. Running solid, no problems.

I have a BT50. Great ride. Suspension could be a bit softer, but it's an ute after all.

Funny Ford also have this 1.0L engine in the Formula Ford Racers, Focus and the much bigger Mondeo [Top Gear Feb 2015] report on the test of the 1.0L Mondeo say it is good and keeps up very well in such a big and heavy car, they say it is more on the leisurely side but not terminally sluggish...

How important are the fuel savings to you ?

If you are only driving a little round town everyday and no or few long journeys you may find you only spend a couple of thousand baht per month on fuel.

The Mazda 2 was my first thought as well, but they are quite pokey and expensive for what they are, same as the ecoboost fiesta. Both are basically fiestas which start at 200,000 baht cheaper than the ecoboost fiesta and mazda 2 diesel which are supposed to save you money. If you only spend a 2000 to 5000 Baht a month on petrol it will take you 10 to 20 years to break even on the supposed fuel savings. Look for independent reviews for real mpg figures as the manufacturers are far from the real world. In reality the ecoboost will save you maybe 25% of your petrol bill at best over a 1.5 fiesta which is 200k cheaper.

@ 2000 baht/ month of petrol you will save 500 baht at best meaning it would take 33 years to break even.

@ 5000 baht / month of petrol you will save 1250 baht at best meaning it would take 13 years to break even.

real wold review mpg figures give the mazda 2 diesel about 50% better fuel economy and diesel being 4 baht/litre cheaper..

@ 5000b per month in a fiesta 1.5 would be about 2300 in a mazda 2 diesel, but that still means 6 years to break even or 15 years at only 2000 baht / month.

Of course resale values will affect this but I can't see any car that small having a good one.

@arthurwait

You compare what to what? Petrol Fiesta vs. Diesel Mazda2?

The Diesel Mazda2 is quite new, so I don't have seen any real consumption numbers. Previously there was a Ford Focus Diesel. Not many small Diesels in this country... As Mazda and Ford shares a lot of components, that makes it even more difficult to compare.

Fiesta 1.5 to Fiesta ecoboost

Fiesta 1.5 to Mazda 2 diesel.

There are reviews on the web saying what the mpg figures are really like.

Autocar here....

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/mazda/2/first-drives/2015-mazda-2-15-skyactiv-d-uk-review

Mazda like to band 83.1 mpg about, but

Autocar..............Motorway overtaking is therefore best attempted with a downshift, while country road passes require a couple of them. The trade-off is outstanding, fairly effortless real-world fuel economy. Economy in the mid-60s is very easily achieved on a mixed route, and we can believe a return starting with a '7' would be possible with the right driving style.

Sounds not too bad to me. Given that we have not much choice in fuel efficient small cars in this country anyway.

Last time in Europe we rented a Skoda, that bitch did not eat more than 4.5l. We went a full loop through Germany, Italy and Austria. Fantastic car.

So if Mazda/Ford could catch up here with such technology, and not the petrol eco car shit, it would be a step in the right direction. Others may follow.

...104hp @ 4000 rpm for the Diesel.

Something for you to consider: 2015 1.8 litre turbo charged, 6 speed automatic or manual. My wife recently purchased the automatic sedan model in Chiang Mai at a reasonable price. The Thai built MG6 went into production at a plant in Rayong nearly 4 months ago. You might check it out. I'm working abroad so haven't had a chance to test drive it first hand.
