From what I have read, the MGs are circa 10 years behind your average Euro/Jap car.

ROFL, that even worse than I thought...

would not worry about 1.0L engines being to small, there are many + most makes of cars here with the 660 cc engine, even with far less then 1.0L they appear to keep up well.

Well these cars seat 4 people, but if you want to take 4 adults around all the time, the ecocars/mazda 2/ fiesta are all a bit cramped in the rear, especially for taller adults. If we are talking small adults or kids, they smaller cars are ok. Their acceleration will suffer though, except for the fiesta turbo /mazda 2 diesel that have much more torque. They can deal much better with a heavier load. I have a suzuki swift that is fine for around town, but would not want to take 4 people in it for any long distance. Me wife and the kid are ok though.

Given the way the roads flood in bkk in the wet season, I'll be looking for a higher riding vehicle after I sell my honda. The new cx-3 could be a good choice (with diesel), but it is rather smallish in the back and ride height is not much more than a regular sedan. Looks very good though. There will also be a honda br-v coming up that will have the jazz engine in it. That's another small suv, but ride height is about 200 mm, much more than the cx-3.

The MG6 is over the OP's budget, but the MG3 is well within budget

The top model MG3 is 559,000 baht http://www.mgcars.com/en/mg-models/mg3/hatchback/price

what other car for this price has 2 Airbags, ABS, Full Leather interior, Sunroof etc...

many used car that are well built

For sure I bought a 10 year old one owner, low km, Audi A6 in 2008

for me as a car is far better than the top model Jazz I bought new in 2004. some friend thought me mad in 2008 changing from a 4 year old Jazz to a 10 year old Audi

Easy: Mazda 2 Diesel. Small, fits 4 people ok, goes for under 700,000 and consumes the least of all small cars in that category. Otherwise Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost.

Mazda 2 diesel is a great car and offers savings over long trips, around the city it offers little in savings and is comparable to other small cars.

Option One for me, Mazda 2 (But not city driving)

2. Honda Jazz

3. Ford Fiesta

And just to add, Mazda, along with Merc and a few others including Honda are presently going through a diesel emissions scandal in the EU (not sure here) making false claims regarding their emissions.

As many people suggested the mazda2, I also like this car. The design is quiet nice and modern. not many of small car are using diesel. But one thing that I not sure is when I want to sell it will the price drop a lot?. My Thai friend suggested me to buy Honda jazz because when sell out can get higher price. Isn't it?

Old mazda 2 looks horrible, but the new one looks decent but yeah.. drops in price a ton.

Jazz and City holds well. Few years ago i bought a used City in bangkok 5 years ago and sold it back 7-9months later in phuket.. It cost me about 2000-2500 per month after the sale(including top insurance). I sold it quick to a tent so i could of lost even less.

Get a Honda city, had mine for 3 years no major problems only buy a new battery.

We bought the top model 704,000 baht, and my wife got 100,000 back from the first buyers scheme, nice to drive not to bad on economy, and fits 4 adults comfortably.
