Shan Myanmar girl, 15, rescued from karaoke bar
The Nation

KANCHANABURI - A medical test has confirmed that one of the seven sex workers rescued on Wednesday from a karaoke bar in Kanchanaburi's Muang district was a 15-year-old Shan Myanmar girl.

Officials said they would proceed with human trafficking charges against the bar's owner and employees.

Following an anti-trafficking organisation's tip-off about prostitution, a sting operation was conducted at the railway-side bar in Tambon Pak Phrae.

Officials found seven sex workers and a Myanmar maid, 28. They apprehended receptionist Somchai Intra, 59, and bar caretaker Nonthasit Chomdara, 39. Six of the sex workers were from Myanmar and one was from Laos. One Myanmar girl was identified as 22 years old on her passport, but she was suspected of being much younger. She was submitted for dental and bone mass tests at the Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital and found to be 15 years old.

The elusive bar owner, Supichaya Kleepmek, 47, as well as two apprehended employees, Somchai and Nonthasit, would be charged with human trafficking, Muang Kanchanaburi district chief Sattha Kachaplayuk said.

This must be a new Thai method of dating peoples ages.......what do they do...look up their date?

I wonder how much tea money it takes to become "elusive".

If Thailand sincerely wants change then it's SIMPLE. Follow rule of law. If/when found guilty of ANY crime... do the time. NO EXCEPTIONS.

But as we all know this won't happen in Thailand.

Ignorance rules, this is a well known method even used in the Netherlands to estimate ages of people. Back in the Netherlands its used to check ages of immigrants that pretend to be real young.

So its not a Thai thing but an accepted method mr negativity.

I wonder if this is a case wher:

- Someone notified the cops.

- The cops arrived and took some details and took the young girl who has now been assesses (by proper means) as 15.

- The owner was not held at the raid time and the owner knows full well the girl in underage and this will now mean big trouble (for the owner).

- Owner has fled.

- Cops now can't find the owner, and 'acting all surprised' say 'the owner is elusive'.

- Well done RTP.

Agree, for Thailand one of the main things that urgently needs change is respect for the law, fair and balanced application of the law, equal for all citizens.

Until this happens nothing much will be changed or improved.

I don't get this story totally.

1. Is the bar in trouble for having prostitutes all else being equal?

2. What is the age of adulthood, consent, driving, contractual capacity, etc. here? I thought it was fifteen, but that's just going on what the locals say, which generally isn't consistent or reliable.

3. I'm quite concerned about all of the comments about the Rule of Law I always see here. They're all made by people who're presumably Western who have very little grasp of how corrupt our own countries are, the lengths the police will go to to cover for crime, etc.. It's an endemic and half the laws they do prosecute are on behalf of criminals and they wouldn't be crimes here---harassment, urinating in a bush, making some noise, giving someone a little shove, etc.. Here you can drive without a licence for decades without it becoming worth getting one. I don't know what happens when they get pulled, but they have been and nothing seems to happen worth investing in one, so compare that to a driving ban and possible prison in the UK, and you have to admit there's an upside to their relaxed approach to enforcement.

There is no "upside" to relaxed enforcement of laws... Especially when its usually relaxed for reasons of money...

What upside is there to have "unlicensed people driving for decades"?

1- possibly, if sex is taking place on premises, which is illegal. "freelancer" prostitution is not illegal in Thailand.

2- non-promiscuous non-commercial sex: 15, freelance prostitution: 18, contractual capacity: 20, be a customer in a bar serving alcohol: 20.

3- up to you. I can agree to relaxed enforcement as long as the infractions don't seriously harm third parties or society as a whole. But just wait until someone who is much bigger than you gives you a "little shove". The police is here to maintain order and calm, bullies must be broken and castrated.

P.S. your questions 1 and 2 have already been discussed in detail on the forum, a search will provide you with the details if interested.

One Myanmar girl was identified as 22 years old on her passport,

So who is guilty here?

- Did the bar owner know that she was 15 years old and procure an illegal, Myanmar passport for her?

- Did the girl herself procure that illegal passport in Myanmar

- Did the bar owner suspect that she was underage, but her passport convinced him otherwise?

Too many ifs and unknowns to pass a valid comment or apportion blame.

Prostitution

Legal in a licenced premises where the girls are also registered

These girls in discos on streets are breaking the law. Some use extortion tactics once in your home. Even though there was never any mention of sex. They assume they deserve to take your money

Mainly as police have supported these sickos for decades. I will never bend in any circumstance

Caution to all never trust

It won't be long before the lunatics show up to this topic telling us not to judge the situation with Western eyes and how lucky she was to have such a wonderful job.

If, and only if, she passed herself off as 22 by producing and using a false passport then there is every likelihood that in the West the owner would be found not guilty.

Unfortunately, attempts to assess age with X-ray scans of teeth or wrists are doomed to failure, according to work to be published this week in the British Medical Bulletin. The fundamental flaw with such tests is that, because children grow at widely different rates, skeletal maturity shown on X-rays – which is used to gauge age – doesn’t necessarily match chronological age. Teenagers can have adult bone structure as early as 15 or later than 20, says study authorTim Cole at University College London (UCL). He says X-rays can provide the wrong answer about whether someone is under or over 18 up to a third of the time.

which in some ways is good because a lot of their laws have no practical purpose, they are there just to see if people will conform to the authorities, seems we didnt learn much from the nuremberg trials

At least these Kanchanaburi Karaoke sex-slaves didn't have thie arms hacked off with a machete by a local policeman, for refusing his advances.

Perhaps he was back on duty and part of this police team.

nice try mate but I highly doubt that it would work out that way in the West.

ps: highly unlikely that she was the one who found the fake passport herself. whistling.gif
