Apologies if this should go elsewhere, not sure where it fit in.

What is the procedure on updating the passport number on a 5 year DL with a few years left on it?

Specifically will I need any kind of residency certificate, or other such doc, and will I need to be at the office early in the morning and view training film etc.?

Have asked this in my local forum but am getting info I wish to double check.

Hmmm, I just got a new passport and probably won't bother to "update" my Thai 5-year license with the new number.

When I got this 3rd 5-year license a couple years ago it went quite quickly, once I got through the looooong line, about 30 minutes for the line, less than 10 for paying, photo, and printing.

Two licenses ago it had my yellow tambien ban number on it and I didn't notice that the gal used my now expired passport number on the current one.

The OP has already asked in the Phuket forum. It should be noted that the OP now has a tourist visa which changes the DL validity from 5 years to 1 year.

It's not clear why the OP needs to show his DL to immigration for a tourist visa extension. At most he needs to prove he has been registered at a Thai address by his land lord. No need for Certificate of Residency.

HI L i K

thanks for this response, but no lease, landlord gone missing, thought this DL would be sufficient for the TV extension proof, but the number is from expired passport

Landlord has never registered me, I thought the border entry/arrival form was sufficient.

There doesn't seem any requirement to do it. They'll update it on your DL when you renew it. At least that's what I did when I got a new passport.

Just a possible way to prove residency not renew the DL which has several years validity

Don't want to muddle the query too much but was getting some dubious info on the local thread so posted here.

Thanks for your response

Nope - arrival card not sufficient. Every foreigner must be registered by the landlord/hotel/guesthouse/home owner on the day of arrival. It's legal requirement on pain of a heavy fine on the landlord.

I recently got a new passport and updated the info on my driver's licenses. I thought it was best to have my documents correct in case of questions by police or insurance carriers and the general focus on who is living in Thailand and have they complied with the laws. I did mine in Pattaya and it was very easy. No testing, videos, etc. just bring old and new passport along with copies of all relevant pages and copies of your current licenses. They checked documents and then I paid the fees and had photo and new license issued. They return your old one which is why you need copies (front and back) to leave with them. Also a chance to change address if necessary but that probably requires immigration residency letter.
