Having a look for somewhere nice for New Year and came across Labua. Couldn't believe the prices so asked was there a mistake. No there wasn't.

Hi Sean. On December 31, we will have special dining offers for our guests. Here are the available options at our Dome restaurants that you can choose from: Mezzaluna (Modern innovative 9-course menu) - THB 30,600.82 net per person ....Sirocco (Fine Mediterranean 8-course menu) - THB 25,892.82 net per person Breeze (Sumptuous Asian 8-course menu) - THB 28,246.82 net per person Distil (Tantalizing international 8-course menu) - THB 21,184.82 net per person

So there you have it.....€750 euro per person for a meal which equates to approx €100 euro per course.!!! Don't all rush to book a table.

Are they mad?

ps....any ideas for a really nice night with ace food??

Why not try it on.....sucker born every min. Bangkok is a well populated city that runs on "face" so why not......

It is one of the best hotels in Bangkok. What were you expecting? Try the Oriental.

What was I expecting? A meal for a reasonable cost. Best hotel or not the price is stupid....like anyone who would think this is good value.

You must be used to paying €1,400, plus tip plus wine/drinks for a meal for two?

Lucky you.

ps...have eaten many times in oriental.

Yeah, except it's New Year's Eve about which you inquired. Five star hotel (debatable but...), made famous by a popular movie, one of the best views in the city, on the most popular party night of the year.

So yeah, what were you expecting?

Unless its for a special occasion, i would question why anyone would want to head out on NYE, unless they can find somewhere within walking distance.

You generally pay X multiples of the price you would do on any other night, for worse service, and major headaches getting to and from anywhere.

That price is ridiculous though, especially for La Bua, which for me is probably just about a four star hotel at a major push.

The price is very important to brag about, you gain face if you tell all your friends you go there.

It doesn't matter what you eat for that price.

Maybe you even have to sit inbetween crying baby's while eating facepalm.gif

We had a mandatory christmas buffet one day at Samui, expensive but i forgot the price.

When food was served we had to stand in a very long line and when it was our turn at the buffet all the goody's were gone.

For meat we had to order it from the cook and wait even longer.

Never again, we stay home at NY and have a party with people who live close enough to walk to.

You do know how much this hotel charges for a room, don't you? Those New Year restaurant prices should be expected.

Setting the prices at the level they do also ensures that they don't get overrun with the ThaiVisa members.

How much would you pay there on a normal night for a 9-course meal? 200-300€ per person?

Like others mentioned: it's NYE and it's Lebua, a famous 5 star hotel. Price is irrelevant.

There will be no lack of loaded locals and tourists to fill up the place come NYE.

Huston Blumenthal's restaurant The Fat Duck recently did a 6 Month residency at Crown Casino in Melbourne. I think the menu was a set price of around $450 Aussie or about 12,000 Baht. So one of the top restaurants in the world with 3 Michelin stars charges less than half what the non Michelin rated and barely 4 star Lebua wants. As someone said it's just for bragging rights.

The price was the same regardless of the day. Sundays, public holidays, religious festivals, Easter etc but not sure if it ran over New Year.

Keeping in mind that the staff there would have a pay rate per hour that was probably way more than the Lebua staff earn in a day.

I can't speak about the Lebua since i've never been there but many other 5* hotels in BKK don't have trained experienced personell. We should be happy if they speak english at all. They sure have never heard of a hotelschool.

the casino sponsored the price and not on NYE

Do some of you people also walk into the Ferrari show room and wonder why cars with 4 wheels are so expensive?

ps... I suggested the Oriental as an alternative as you were looking for something nice. I ate there and didn't remember it being actually all that much. Although it is NYE so not sure what they do that night. You should have went to Valentine's 2007. Makes this NYE look cheap.

I don't understand moaning about the Lebua prices. If you don't like them don't go. It's not that you have to. So why moan? And from Lebua's point of view they're not dumb. They'll pack them in on NYE for sure. Bkk is not lacking its Donald Trump set.

Why are you complaining. If people are happy to pay this let them - its their money.

Find a place that you like and go there.

Live and let live.

Wow! Do they have the culinary depth to back this kind of thing up or just hype ? Does it include wine pairings?

Joel Robuchon (Ebisu,Tokyo, Michelin 3 Star) menus change seasonally and the "special Autumn dinner" is ¥42,000 net plus 12 percent service. The restaurant is in an imposing full sized free standing stone faux French Chateau in the middle of Ebisu Garden Place. Of course dress codes, reservations, the full monty. "New Years Eve" is not a big deal in Japan for adults, probably same menus. You are not going to get anywhere near 750 Euro per person unless you start ordering some crazy wines.

Do you really want to spend New Year Eve with that type of crowd?

Outdoor dining on New Year Eve at one of the 5 star places along the river would be a lot more interesting I bet.

You probably want to avoid the traffic jams so a place near the BTS or river would work.

The ShangriLa is right next to the BTS.

The Oriental, Hilton, Peninsula to name a few have river taxi from BTS. Nice way to arrive for a special evening.

Never eaten at Labua but have eaten twice at Sirocco. The atmosphere was great, live jazz band, great view but it ended there. The food was very ordinary and very expensive and the wine list was really expensive. I think really the place trades off the view. My strategy now is to go and have a drink at the Sky Bar and then head somewhere else for dinner. I agree with other posters also that NYE and Valentine's Day are just opportunities for hotels and restaurants to gouge patrons.

????????

Eight courses @ €750 a head. = €93.75 a course.

Should I get my money back from my Maths teacher??? Or should you?

Can't see BKK as they don't put the prices on the menus.

My guess? I'd say 5-6,000 Bht a head++ plus wines.

A three star restaurant in Europe....higher costs.....and the epitome of excellence charges around the €200 mark per head. This varies of course with the restaurant.

I have eaten in a three star, a few two star and they charge about €100-150 a head. A one star €75-100 a head all for a seven or eight course menu.

Yes....those with more money than sense will probably want to be seen or boast about being there.

Yes....I am done with the Oriental. The past two meals were awful.

Thanks RR.....for the tips. Have eaten in all mentioned.

I did ask in my post if anyone has suggestions but got hit on for all kinds of reasons.

Replies did not, and could not, justify the price of €1,500 for one meal for two people with no wines included for a restaurant with not even one Michelin star.

Funny....Marriott if memory serves me right had a v good buffet, and reasonable. But for NYE??
