One million lao kip.....anywhere to change?

A million Lao kip is currently about $122.00, I believe.....which would indicate you don't often eat at the food courts!

As far as I know, the banks around here want nothing to do with Lao kip so the only thing I can suggest is to try to find somebody going to Laos and make a deal.

That's what I thought, but worth a try. Spot on with the food courtssmile.png Thanks for the reply....

Bangkok Bank include Lao Kip (LAK) on their foreign exchange listing, presumably they will purchase from you.

If it's in pristine condition they might.

Because it's on their exchange listing, doesn't mean they will take it.

Spot on.

Don't count on it.

I've always heard that it was not a convertible currency. That's why I spend it before leaving the country.

They pronounce it "keep" and that's what you do with it if you don't spend it in Laos.

Run an ad on one of the FB swap sites. Offer 10,000 per USD.....note there condition and denominations. Lots of people going to Vientiane from here on visa related matters.

I have changed Lao Kip notes at Bangkok Bank Mae Hia and Chang Phuak branches this year. No more difficult than changing US dollars, and no raised eyebrows.

Bangkok Bank will only take then in pristine condition.

Too bad I am in Bangkok right now or I would change it for you at it's real value. I live over there and don't need to make 5 or 10 bucks ripping off a fellow Farang on the exchange rate.

I always try to use Thai baht whenever and wherever I can in Laos.

The problem is that people won't usually give baht in change; and I end up with my pockets stuffed with those funky little bills.

It feels like playing Monopoly... and winning!

Then go to another country and find out that you have a lot of funny money that nobody wants.

About 8 years ago I went to Lao and exchanged thai bhat to kip. I didnt spend it all and when I got back to Pattaya I went to one of the banks there

to exchange it back to bhat. The girl at the bank giggled and called other employees over to have a look for a good laugh.

Best way it to find someone going to Lao if not the money is worthless outside of Lao.

No - Bangkok Bank will take it. The exchange rate is posted on the same board as other exchangeable currencies. I checked today.

It might be posted, but try to get them to take the notes unless pristine.

The same applies with many other cash currencies listed.

I have changed modest amounts twice in the last year at Bangkok Bank Mae Hia branch - not pristine, clearly used, but not falling apart either. No problem whatsoever.
