Riot and fire reported at juvenile centre in Songkhla

SONGKHLA: A riot reportedly erupted at the Regional Juvenile Vocational Training Centre 9 in Songkhla province Saturday. An informed source said smoke billowed out of the centre at around 3pm, after which several juvenile inmates were seen running out of the facility.

Police and soldiers were then deployed to control the situation.

The source said some youths were injured.

19 injured and over 30 escaped from Songkhla’s remand home for juveniles

SONGKHLA: Over 30 juvenile delinquents escaped from a remand home in Songkhla after a riot in the premise on Saturday which left 19 others injured, four of them in serious conditions from knife wounds.

Police and corrections officials managed to capture 16 of the escapees, leaving 19 who are still at large.

The riot took place at the remand home after officials there tried to stop separate two rival groups of the detained youths who were engaged in a fierce arguments which eventually ended in a free-for-all with some of them burning their clothes and torching a building.

It was reported that during the riot, some youths managed to break through the concrete wall with hand tools. Altogether 35 of them escaped.

The riot prompted corrections officials to call in the police and naval personnel to quell the violence which was put down about two hours after it started. 19 were found injured mostly from knife wounds, including four who were seriously injured.

The actual cause of the incident is now under investigation.
