I am aware that this is not done at the "1stop service" office but at the old IMM. office. My question is do I need to arrive before dawn for this or can I just waltz in at my leisure? Any RECENT experiences with this procedure?

Do you have an extension of stay from Immigration or just here on a visa? Visas are not transferred and you just depart using both passports. If on extension then yes the permitted to stay extension and a notation of original visa is made in the new passport.

Airport office normal working hours ok for transfer stamps. Make sure you have "embassy transfer request" letter and complete Immi transfer form at office.

No need to keep old passport handy. Paper "stamp" is not re-applied but replaced by a different kind of stamp - ink blotter, rubber stamp kind of stamp.

It's always a good idea to save your old passports, just as it's a good idea to save your old bankbooks.

I've assisted people who were repatriating and having trouble closing out their local bank accounts, especially large accounts like their 800,000 baht visa accounts. Some branch managers don't want to let that money go. If a person opened the account with an expired passport and, especially if their signature has changed due to age or illness, they've been known to refuse to release the money.

I've been involved in cases where we had to get a letter from the U.S. Consulate stating that the holder of the new passport is the same person as the holder of the old passport.

Also, by saving all your old bank passbooks, you can demonstrate to the bank the deterioration in your signature as you age because there is a page in the back where they can view your signature under a blacklight.

Was not aware of "embasy transfer request letter" will the U.S. consulate supply this at the time I pick up my new PP ? I will most definatly bring the old PP with the nonexpired extension of stay stamp so there is no confusion or questions on their part.

They will if you ask for it.

Half a dozen replies, including mine, and no answers to the original question. Who knows what's going on at the old office these days?

I believe there was a post a couple months ago where someone said they got into a queue around 7:30 am at the old office to transfer extensions stamps into a new passport.
