5 day trip: I would like turquoise water, no party scene on teachers budget

Any recommendations? I would like to take my girlfriend on a trip from Bangkok to an island or someplace that is not too expensive, has nothing called a moon festival, excessive partying etc... remote but still has a few things to see and do. I really do not want crowds and want to avoid if at all possible lots of traffic etc. Unfortunately I am limited to traveling around New Years. I've heard flying to Phuket and take a speed boat to PP island is nice. Or somewhere I saw that you could take a overnight ferry to an island from Bangkok. Please help. Thanks.

ps. small hikes, snorkeling, decent hotel, outdoor market, eating near the beach, rent a scooter... that kind of trip.

No excessive partying or crowds and you think Phi Phi might be good ??

Can I ask why you need an island ? You can find all the things you want at a nice quiet beach on the mainland, Trang as an example...

I don't know anything about Phi Phi, but from your response I will look elsewhere. So can you recommend a few places I can check on hotels and semi-importantly how to get there. I don't have a car, don't need an island. thanks for responding.

with cheap airfares , are there any interesting islands or beaches to go to ?

and then go to the other side of the island that is more "locals" or down the coast a few KMs ?

And an easy way to get from the Airport to hotel / guesthouse wthout the Taxi Mafia wantng more than your airfare !

Thung wua laen beach, chumphon. But now with rainy/windy season approaching, water will not be so clear.

Edit: sorry, not remote. But there are some resorts that have more exclusive access to parts of the beach.

I've traveled around a lot and I can't think of a place like you describe that will be without tourists around new years. Thais also travel, so pretty much everywhere will be jam packed.

Perhaps some of the lesser known islands off the coast of Cambodia? We were just at a nice place south of Hua Hin. During the week, absolutely empty. Weekends get a bit busy.

Check out Ko Kut, sometimes spelled Ko Kood, in Trat. We went there in July and it was great, pretty much what you are looking for, but unfortunately you will be going at the height of the tourist season so will more expensive and crowded. We stayed at the A Na Lay Resort which in July was only B1000 per night including breakfast. There are many resorts there so google Ko Kod and start looking. You will first go to Trat then from there to the ferry which is about a 30 min ride from Trat city. The ferry was about 1 hour. You may have to spend a night in Trat and if so suggest you stay at the Rimlong Boutique Hotel. Great place and the owner, Tooh, can make the arrangements for you to get to the ferry. As another poster has suggested you might also want to consider Ko Samet. Much easier to get to, just make sure you don't go there over the weekend.

How did you get to Trat? I will look into train or bus as I dont have a car.

We have a car so we drove. Their is no train service so you will have to take a bus and I think you can get it at the bus station on Sukhumvit Road across from Soi Ekamai.

ok I booked my rooms.. didn't have too many choices since nearly everything was booked, but ended up saving money without AC etc. Thanks for all the help. I will try out each destination over the next year - they all look great. S

southeast part of ko samet. We stayed at malibu beach resort. Day snorkel boat around the island stopped and swam at 3 places. nightly barbecue put out by all 7 of the little hotels. water was fine. the best water will of course be on the indian ocean side of things. Frankly Karon beach was pretty good. Plenty of discount places there that are fine to sleep in for a few nights. i plan on ko chang on my next visit because i still haven't been there.
