Extra Vietnamese dong on your hands?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

A friend and I are heading to Vietnam for a couple of weeks starting December 8. While I need a little $US for visas and such, I'd prefer to hit the country with some local money in hand. Not a necessity but handy.

So, I'm curious if anyone has managed to make it back to Thailand (I'm in Chiang Mai) with some extra don't that they would like to get rid of for Thai baht, at the current exchange rate, of course. I can do ATMs in Vietnam but they limit you to about 3,000,000 dong (roughly $US130-140) per transaction along with an ATM fee.

Doing the change here in Chiang Mai would be easiest but we will be in Bangkok on December 7 and might be able to pull it off there.

Thanks

David

Thanks siam2007. I'll check their branches here in CM as well.

Vietnam is the best place to blow your dong.

Don't know about CM, but returning from Vietnam before, I have found it very hard to exchange Vietnamese Dong, even at the poor exchange rate you will get in Thailand.

I would plan on spending it, even at the airport in Vietnam if necessary.

My advice, get rid of it before you leave Vietnam.

As I recall in Ho Chi Minh there was a good coffee shop selling excellent Vietnamese Coffee. at the airport.

with damn good fresh sandwiches too.

Agreed that Vietnamese Dong are worthless outside of Vietnam. Was hoping to find some folks that were stuck with some. We could both benefit from the exchange. I don't plan on bringing any back with me.

I just came back to Chiangmai with about $100us of Vietnam dong. I intended to keep them for my upcoming trip to Vietnam so not anxious to trade them. However, if you're stuck and must have some perhaps I can help. Frankly, I would be happier to provide useful tips on VN than to trade in my dong. Haha
