Gents I,m off to BKK next month to renew my UK passport,my only slight issue is proof of residency and what to use,I have a 5 year Thai driving licence,I could get a letter from the apartment owners confirming my address but from what I have read on here a photo copy of my "O" visa should suffice, can anyone enlighten me on which is best please?

Thanks

Have you got any recent correspondence from the UK showing your Thai address? Last year I used a recent UK bank statement on an old account. This was accepted, no issues.

Can you not get a Thai bank statement ?

I dont think that a letter from your landlord would be accepted

Your Thai drivers license will be accepted. Your address is on the back of it. Have it translated to English.

Why should we be expected to provide proof of residency if HMPO are not prepared to send our replacement passports by courier from the UK direct to our Thai addresses?

Yet another paradoxical absurdity of the "With-It Tower Passport Renewal Experience", I think! Before HMPO inflicted this whole ridiculous procedure on us, it was possible to receive your new passport at your Thai address without this having to be proved to anyone!

My point is you can get a new PP without having to go home to do so and yet people still complain, VFS and your respective Governments provide this service for you which I doubt they are legally obliged to do so (Government) making it a lot easier for people instead of having to go home and yet some people are still not happy

It was a hell of a lot easier for those of us living some distance from Bangkok in the days when you could simply submit your application by post/courier and have your new passport delivered to you direct without the need for a couple of arduous trips to some office building with an extremely silly name somewhere in deepest darkest Bangkok!

As we Americans say "Suck it up".

And, of course, you Americans are not forced to make a couple of trips to Bangkok from the back of beyond at passport renewal time, are you? Nope, you can simply hand in your application when the Embassy outreach next rolls into town and have your new passport sent to you direct.

A bit rich for you to suggest that we Brits should "suck it up" when you Yanks don't have to, then, I think!

Sorry but just a quick one along the same track

British friend has 10 yr old lad that needs to renew Passport but the problem he has is that he requires to have a British Citz of JP ranking that has known him for 2 yrs

Any thoughts

Thanks

There are only consular outreaches to certain cities and not everywhere in the country and they are not always at the right time for some people to do their applications.

I did two day trips by air to Bangkok to get my new passport because it was easier than going to an the nearest outreach that is a 5 hour road trip from here.

You will find that most countries do not offer a application by mail here.

If this is a passport renewal, and not an original passport application, I think you will find the authorities reasonably flexible on the witness requirement. They understand that it can be difficult for overseas residents. A Thai with an official position (such as local village headman) who knows your son should be OK, as would any professional British citizen, such as a qualified teacher.

In my experience they do not check if the countersignatory has known the child for 2 years. Infact they didn't contact them at all.
