PHUKET: -- The Phuket Marine Office has vowed to punish anyone caught dumping waste or rubbish into Phuket’s waters and reward those who provide tip-offs leading to arrests.

Phuripat Theerakulpisut, chief of the Phuket Marine Office, signed off on a warning letter that reiterated that officers will strictly enforce the law. Those caught violating the law face up to six months imprisonment, a fine of up to 10,000 baht or both. Harsher penalties, which include up to three years imprisonment, a fine of up to 60,000 baht or both, are reserved for those caught releasing chemicals or hazardous waste.

“Anyone who gives us a tip-off that leads to an arrest, will be given a 10,000 baht reward,” said Mr Phuripat.

The strict enforcement comes fast on the heels of a major clean up operation that saw divers remove more than 400 kilograms of trash from a catchment area between Kata and Karon Bay on Monday (story here).

In the bay of Siam area they dump boatloads of rubbish by the ton every day at sea. When the tide and current change it gets washed up on the beach and everyone blames the fishermen / foreign vessels. They are also to blame as are the floating restaurants.

There are plans on building a massive coal fired power plant in Krabi. They have enough rubbish strewn on the beaches and down the back Sois of Jomtien to fuel 10 Power plants.

Singapore recycles 60% of its rubbish and burns the rest in special generators that reduces the rubbish to a harmless black dust that they have put into the sea to build new islands. These islands have mangrove planted on them and in no time at all, all manner of wildlife and marine life has flourished.

Far be it for this country to actually take advise from any one. They even refused advise from specialist engineers from the Netherlands to help stem the floods in Bangkok .....and the PM at the time (she) had 800 boats face up stream in the Chaopraya river and run their engines full blast to push the water out to sea in the name of Canute.....if there is a god we are beyond help .........
