PHUKET: -- The controversial “Hollywood Movie Museum” that Bangkok officials planned for Nai Harn Beach will not go ahead, Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MoTS) Phuket office Director Santi Pawai confirmed to The Phuket News this week.

The news follows local residents successfully rejecting the proposed B40-million tourist attraction at a public meeting at the Rawai Municipality offices on Friday night (Nov 20).

Central to the local residents’ objections to the project was that the initial plan required about 40 pine trees on the Nai Harn beachfront to be cut down. The construction plan was then revised so that – apparently – the project would not require any trees to be cut down.

However, that was not enough to assuage residents’ concerns and sway them to support the project at the public meeting on Friday. Their reasons for rejecting the B40 million project was that most residents preferred to maintain the natural environment of the beach and believed nature is the reason tourists come to Phuket.

“The Movie Museum project at Nai Harn beach will be terminated,” Mr Santi said on Tuesday (Nov 24). “However, the MoTS will work with the Phuket Governor to find a more suitable place in Phuket within the coming week.”

Mr Santi added that Gov Chamroen will also meet with local community leaders within the coming week to find a more suitable locale for the movie museum.

They probably don't read TV but anyway some kind thanks to Director Santi and Governor Chamroen for seeing the light and putting a full stop here.

Ol Croc and a few of us have mentioned out on Wiset by the seashell museum would be good as easy access, plenty of bus parking, just up the street is a TV poster's wife's restaurant maybe they'll pitch in a 10% off to eat at their place for the tour buses.

Seems to be a lot of space up on Cape Phromthep especially if they are just talking about some boards showing films made here. Could double that in with a nice sunset view stroll. Wiset to Rawai Beach to up the hill shouldn't cause too much road havoc.

What's the biggest issue in Phuket that needs investment?

Road safety

Inconsistent law enforcement

Attitude adjustment

Drainage in Patong

Patong Hill

Beach management fiasco

A temporary movie museum

Should a movie museum be the highest priority?

If there was honest and effect law enforcement here, I think you would find many of Phuket's "issues" would not be issues at all.

Corruption is out of control here, and having a negative impact in so many sectors.

We all like Thailand because it's not "a Nanny State" but the corruption on Phuket is a free for all.
