Hi all.

I am very overweight and I can see my 9 year old son starting to. I am currently paying for my eating sins and decided to get back into some moderate exercises. He loves football so he is now in a football club.

Too heavy to walk far, pains, etc etc.

So I bought a nice sized punching bag. I want to do some light stuff in the early morning and when I come back from work.

Can someone give me some hints for a noob like me? Light warm up routines, etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated. The stop eating brigade need not post. lol

Well the really good news is you decided to actually do something about it,i am not sure a punching bag is the right thing to start off with but since you have one you can put it to use.

I would suggest you go to a place where they can show you how to use it,just starting to punch away at it will leave you with over extended elbow injuries and damaged wrists.

It would also depend on how hard and how heavy the bag is.There must be a Muay Thai club some where near you where they can help you get started. It is almost like learning to drive a car from a book, better if someone can show you.

Sorry to be part of the stop eating brigade but that is the one thing that will reduce overweight the fastest.

If you don't put it on you don't need to lose it!!

You are lucky to have a son who likes football(soccer)? You can practice kicking the ball together and enjoy bonding that way.

Have fun.

A couple of month a Farang lady won a muscle competition in Pattaya, I guess she would have easily pushed the 50 kg...So it is not complete impossible.

Thanks for the answers. All appreciated.

The issue with a muay Thai gym is that it is full of jocks and boxing wannabes. I used to frequent them 10 years ago, but now that scene is not for me.

I am watching some youtube stuff to get some very basic stuff. I will combine it with the early morning walks, cut some food slowly and see how it goes.

And yes, soccer for my son.

Scientifically proven that 'Tabata' is the way forward in burning fat....Get your self a timer, or get someone to time you...Go 20 seconds flat out, then 10 seconds off...20 seconds flat out, and so on...do it minimum 10 times...I'd do it twice a day- honestly that's all you'll need. Dont know your body size, but try and find an eating programme of about 1,500 cals per day...

If you are really serious about losing weight and keeping fit, don`t mind forking out a few bob and want to do all this in the convenience of your own home, these are for you.

Not sure hitting a punching bag makes you lose weight, altho you could easily sprain your wrist.

Id have gone for a rowing machine.

I got a concept 2 model D rowing machine its perfect, but its not cheap.

With being too heavy to walk far I would not run, not even on such a machine, you may get some serious joint problems.

But going with the bicycle outside.....bike somewhere, have a beer there, bike back.......(that 1 beer won't brake the kcal bank and is motivating) for me it is a lot easier to sit 3 hours on the bicycle outside than 35 min inside.

Only problem is some street dogs want to try out some juicy farang meat......vampire.gif

I would worry about upper joint injuries beating on a heavy bag just as I would about the guy going to hit a bucket of balls at a driving range without warming up and prepping for it. Striking a bag involves endless series of complex motions that underused joints and atrophied muscles will not respond well towards.

Wanna lose weight. Dont eat or drink the foods that got you morbidly fat in the first place. Start walking three or five minutes twice a day and increase the time every three days......this time next month you will be walking for an hour each time. Also drink a gallon of water a day. If having to pee more is an obstacle then there is a good chance your a lost cause and sad will be forever fat and even fatter.........Good luck.

At least I would start with a strength training before....
