Thai shippers wary of terrorism in Europe
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- THE Thai National Shippers' Council is keeping an eye on the terrorism situation in Europe, which could be part of the factors making exports miss their target next year.

Chairman Nopporn Thepsithar said yesterday that the council was watching conflicts among nations, including the Russia-Turkey tensions, and terrorism, which tended to spread out with more violence.

The deadly attacks in Paris have also cursed tourism in Europe.

These developments could fray the confidence of consumers and businesses across the world in the next periods.

Thailand is expected to see a contraction in exports to Europe next year.

The council was concerned over next year's outbound shipments, which could grow less than the 2-per-cent target, amid the economic problems in Europe and weakening economies in Japan and China.

If the Thai government speeds up and balances the country's trading partnerships with all countries, including the Trans Pacific Partnership and Asean Plus 6, exports may expand 2 per cent in 2016 as expected, he said.

Exports in October shrank 8.1 per cent, the most this year, to US$18.57 billion. They are expected to run 3 per cent below last year for the last two months of this year, or at $18 billion per month.

Thailand is expected to suffer a drop in exports of 5 per cent for the whole of 2015 to $216.15 billion. This is the sharpest fall in six years and the third straight year for such contraction.

The council cited the low prices of crude oil and commodities, the global economic slowdown and lack of improvement in the country's poor competitiveness for the sharp shrinkage in Thai exports.

The Bank of Thailand also said that the export decline in October followed the economic slowdowns in China and Asean countries, which dampened manufacturing output and private investment.

This situation was also in line with lower-than-normal production capacity utilisation in most industries.

Thai imports were off 21.3 per cent year-on-year, the central bank said. Imports of consumer goods and raw materials excluding crude oil declined due to soft economic activities, especially in manufacturing.

Crude oil imports plunged mainly due to lower global oil prices, while machinery and equipment imports continued slumping along with domestic investment.

Could be any drop in exports of certain products (seafood/products sourced by nestle) to Europe will be more to do with bans imposed by the EU due to slave labour/environmentally unsafe practices as much as anything else.

Hehee just when you think you have heard it all. Their is more danger from the Asian seas than from any terrorist group in Europe. This is clearly an advanced excuse for them to use when exports show a decrease. That way all the thais can have someone else to blame other than themselves and their export problems from using slave labour and from unskilled labour and low quality products.

Interesting that terrorist attacks in Europe are properly so-called, but in Bangkok they're classified as..... um.....er......("Quick, what does China want us to call them?")

Why would the Prayut regime care about any impact of terrorism in exports to the EU? He has already decided to de-emphasize revenues from the export industry and focus on 100% tourism. From that perspective, more terrorism in the EU will drive more tourists to Thailand as will the current conflict between Turkey and Russia.

Albeit some Chinese seem to behave like tourist terrorists when in Thailand. But they just need understanding.

Thailand would be best weaning itself off trade with Europe. In the next decade Europe will be as internationally significant as the Congo jungle. Led by Sweden and Germany, Europe is in a headlong rush to be an Islamic caliphate and seafood and textiles are not a high priority for these savages. Perhaps Thailand could look towards central/south America or other Catholic/Atheist societies for future business opportunities?

No doubt this post will generate some irate European/Commonwealth responses, but I agree on some level, although I don't expect Europe to spin into a black hole to become another Congo. But it's appalling that the Brits, for example, have been so politically correct as to literally look the other way while gangs of the savages from abroad raped local girls in Rotherham and a couple of other towns. Meanwhile the venerable US television news magazine "60 Minutes" went to London to interview some local Sharia Patrol idiots. They accost local British women and tell them to cover up. The one being interviewed by the US woman reporter actualyl ordered her to cover up!!

I love Chinese women. Unfortunately the Chinese tourists have taken over my favorite hotel in Chiang Mai--booked solid for Jan and Feb and I didn't bother looking into March. No doubt due to Chinese New Year and the fact that the hotel is an excellent bargain and very comfortable. But even if i got a room...jeez, I prefer a little diversity anyway!

What a ridiculous opinion.

That is exactly right, that whole article is utter nonesense especially the Turkey Russia spat - if anything that alone should provide opportunities for Thailand to fill the trade gaps created by the sanctions
