Aung San Suu Kyi to hold talks with Myanmar's rulers

YANGON:-- Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is set to hold high-level talks with the country's civilian and military rulers, amid speculations that she could manoeuvre to become president despite the current constitutional restrictions.

Aung San Suu Kyi is scheduled to meet President Thein Sein and military commander General Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday, three weeks after she sent a letter calling for "national reconciliation", ahead of her party taking over the government next year.

The date of the meetings was announced on Monday. The meeting with Thein Sein is expected Wednesday at 0230 GMT, and 0730 GMT with Min Aung Hlaing. Lower House speaker Shwe Mann, another former general, also met with Aung San Suu Kyi on November 19, to discuss the transition.

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) swept the historic parliamentary election last November, winning solid majorities in the lower and upper houses. The party also won most of the regional parliament seats.

While those victories mean that voters want to make "tremendous changes" in the country's politics, its leader Aung San Suu Kyi cannot carry out those changes without the support of the military establishment, said Myo Thein Yan, a Yangon-based political analyst.
