Coming up to renew my vehicle tax soon for label and number plate. Should I be expecting a renewal bill in the post or do I just go to transport department and pay?

In Australia when you register or pay road tax for a vehicle, you also need to pay 3rd party insurance to cover another person or passengers in your car if they are injured. This is different to insurance to cover vehicle damage and is normally paid or included with your road tax. Not sure if its the same here hence questions below...

1) Can I pay before it's actually expired? (don't want to be uninsured)

2) Wife seems to think there are agents around you can go and pay your tax. Is it a lot more expensive?

3) Is there compulsary insurance I need to pay for motorcycle (for other person injury / vehicle damage etc)

4) I have full insurance on my car. Do I need to pay 3rd party insurance for injury to other person same as 3)

Any help appreciated

No bill in the post. You have to watch the schedule on your own.

You can use an agent. Don't know the fee but it will not break the bank.

There is always a compulsory insurance, both car or motorcycle. Coverage is laughable.

I don't know the situation with extra coverage for motorcycles (how to do and how much).

For cars (of a foreigner) an extra 3td party insurance is an absolute must and still the coverage is not too impressive (200'000 bail bond, 1 mio in 3rd party damages?).

If you do an extra insurance at an insurance agent he will also do the registration/tax pay stuff.

I never visited DLT on my own for that.

It can be done early, I don't remember the exact time-frame.

I usually go about two weeks before due date to my insurance agent.

Picking up the documents two days later or so.

How old is your car and motorbike?

No reminder will be sent. It is up to you to remember.

1. Yes, up to 90 days in advance.

2. Yes, agents will sort everything out for you. May cost you an extra 200 Baht. This can vary wildly.

3. You must have the compulsory government insurance. For a motorbike it is usually 300 and something baht. Without it, you cannnot pay your road tax.

4. Yes, despite having fully comprehensive insurance, you still must have the minimum compulsory government insurance.

Regarding 4., the compulsory insurance can be and is quite often included in the comprehensive insurance.

My fully comprehensive insurance policy has big red letters on it stating (in Thai) "Does not include govt compulsory insurance".

Whatever, it is required and must be obviously receipted for the Land Transport official to issue the vehicle tax sticker.

And mine has it included, as did the previous ones. As I said earlier.

Does anyone know how much road tax / insurance is for motorcycle and pick up. Rough idea ok

Depends on the age and type of pickup.

My green plate, 2 door, 20 year old pickup is 900bht tax, 900bht ins, 150bht road test.

Newish scooter, 100bht tax, 300bht ins, 100bht road test.

But a newish 4 door pickup with a blue plate may be 5,000bht tax.

Road tax for all motorbikes is 100 Baht per year.

Motobikes compulsory insurance is dependent on the size of bike. A 125 cc will be around 320 Baht.

Road tax in Thailand is great , after 5 years , each year you pay less! 8 year old pickup 2948 B , next year 2448 B .

Go to the transport department yourself , it takes 5 minutes ( in low population zones).

Only need your blue book and compulsury insurance.

Overtime ( later than your car purchasing date ) , is no problem.

Whatever you do don't pay the tax late.

There is a massive fine of 1bht per month, for each month you are late.

It is a 1THB or 1k THB?

Yes, only these 2 door pickups with the green plate are treated special as utility vehicle.

Tax is dependent on unladen weight and is constant over the years.

Road tax in Thailand is great , after 5 years , each year you pay less! 8 year old pickup 2948 B , next year 2448 B .

4 door pickups are treated identical to passenger cars.

Tax is dependent on displacement and as described it sinks after the 5th year for 10% annually until it reaches 50% of the full tax.

2448 Baht for a 9 year old should be about a 2.2 litre model?

4 Door , 2,5 liter. The reduction is more than 10 % /year.

The reduction is 10% per year as KhunBENQ mentioned, but it's not 10% percent of what you paid last year it's 10% of the full road tax you were paying the first five years.

My premium insurance certainly does not include the obligatory government cover. I get that separately at a different time of year to my main insurance. I just got mine for next year via my insurance agent who does it on the spot. I paid 634B but I have no idea whether that includes a fee or not. Even if it does include a fee I suspect it is less than it would cost me to drive to the DLT.

The tax for my 3-year-old 4-door pick-up is about 4800B and I will be paying this at BigC on Saturday for which there is no extra charge.

3 year old is still full (100%) tax rate. Displacement little less than 2500 ccm.

2498 ccm = 4892 Baht

2475 ccm = 4800 Baht

Do you know the tax on my mitsubishi diesel 2.5L

11+1 seater.

L300

Make 1994.

I don't know it, beacuse the seller paid it last year.

Trying to figure out if Blue on white plates would save me anything on tax

11+1 seater? Well I am a bit uncertain whether this will be taxed as normal passenger cars and 4 door pickups.

If so:

Its now 11 years old, should be 50% of full tax.

Full tax is 4900 Baht.

4900 / 2 = 2450 Baht.

But anyway: if you have the blue book just look there.

You should see the tax payments decreasing from the 6th year.

From the daughters old car (Vios, 1496 ccm), marked in red are 1st and 10th payment (50%):

11+1 seater?

I found a description for passenger cars with more than 7 seats.

It says:

up to 1800 kg empty weight, tax is 1300 Baht

over 1800 kg it is 1600 Baht

As I just found it and it does not say something about blue/white plates I can not guarantee for correct interpretation,

Just seen you huge whistling.gif scan.

That fits to my previous post.

Tax is already very low and I don't think there is a method to save much.

Next payment is due 28 February 2016.

Last payment was late (21 April 2015), looks like a hefty 26 Baht late payment fee, 0.5 Baht per day biggrin.png

Seems even more massive. 26 Baht for 52 days. 0.5 Baht per day cheesy.gif

I have now 16 stamps on registration page. Land Transport officials are now trying to place new printed lines above and between existing lines.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I said "about" because I could not remember offhand exactly how much it is.

In fact it's exactly 4808B.

I take the blue book and the compulsory insurance form to my local BigC (Jomtien) on Saturday. I pay them the money. They print out the sticker for the windscreen and complete the entry in the blue book.

It's two ladies from the local DLT that do it with a laptop and printer. I dont know if it happens in other places.
