What's the concensus on the chrome door handle/tailgate surrounds?

They look cheap and rubbish! Seen second hand trucks with them on, could they be removed easily?

it would look good if only the handles were chromed

the problem is with thais overdoing it and doing the whole area in chrome.

That's why a lot of top models have only the handle in chrome, its a good look. Nothing else though. Not even the trunk handle.

I know some find them tacky, but they do serve a purpose, ie to stop fingernails scratching the paint behind the handle. I must admit on some cars/trucks they can add to the appearance, and even though they are only chrome covered plastic they do seem to hold up well.

Putting that tacky stuff to stop fingernail scratches reminds me of when I was a kid and my parents bought a new Rambler station wagon. My dad went out and bought some plastic seat covers to protect the seats. They were miserable to sit on in the summer.

Who was my dad protecting the seats of our car for, and why would I put fake chrome on the side of my car to protect the paint from scratches for the next owner?

It's not fake chrome, it real, but it's on plastic instead of metal, as is a lot of chrome on late model cars, especially if it's just decorative.

Their must be a mountain of original handles somewhere.

The handles are original it's only a chrome scratch plate that fits behind. Jeez, thought everyone knew that.
well sister inlaws went in white and came out chrome.

I'll tell you what I find tacky. In the US I call them "the garish dealer badges of the central time zone". I was looking to lease once and asked if I could get a new Volvo without the dealer badge. The salesman said it was impossible so I told gave him pfft and left the dealership.

I agree. If I was to buy a car from one of those dealers, it would be deal breaker for me if they attached one of those emblems.

They are only in the Central time zone and parts of the South. Never seen on the west coast.

David McDavid insists on defacing his vehicles with these Texas state map badges the size of a saucer.

So, what was the consensus? tongue.png

Giddyup loves them on a black Triton

Yes I do and not ashamed to admit it. Chrome on black has always looked good.

It's birds fistful of rings that do the damage to the paint. I have the chromey things to stop that damage.

Sorry, does this mean your removal

Ah Ha! Somebody who is not to too ashamed to admit he has them. Come on, now admit you actually like the look.

No I don't, but it is a truck, just does a job and the paint is still OK......smile.png

If it's just a truck, why bother? I had a 7 year old Isuzu D Max that didn't have any plates behind the door handles, and guess what, no scratches. Whatever minor scratches that would occur from nails occasionally hitting the paint, would be negligible and easily buffed out. I would have thought that preferable rather than installing something you don't like.

I didn't know it at the time but when I picked up my new Isuzu V-Cross, it had the total plastic treatment. Door handles, headlight, taillight, dash cover and sill plates with the protective coating still on. My wife had a long talk with the salesman and I had no idea what they were talking about. I did rip off the super ugly dash cover but had to admit that the rest of the crap looks pretty good even if unneeded and unwanted by me. I did want the hood bug deflector and the door visors. I am a smoker and I can open the windows a little when it is raining. The bug deflector works and helps keep the bug splatter off the windshield. We even got a nice framed picture with the boss, salesman and us plus a clock and emergency kit that has a tow strap, tire pressure gage, flashlight with blinking red light plus some other small things. The window tinting is pretty dark but I drew the line for the windshield. Just a dark strip at the top.

Don't forget the free flashlight. It has a seat belt cutter and a carbide tipped window smasher.

I just tried to order one of them for my Ranger. The salesman said that every one he knows with them fitted has had their paint damaged by them, so we're passing.

A salesman told you, oh well, then it must be true! Most of them wouldn't know what size motor is in the cars they sell.

They come with clear, thick, vinyl stickers that you place over the paint in the 4-6 places where it actually attaches to the hood. That means, no scratched paint, and it's removable. If you don't take care of your paint, you will notice different levels of paint/color fade after a few years from them though.

Never take the bug or window deflectors off. Problem solved.

You do understand what a salesman is, don't you?

Yes, in Thailand it usually means someone who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, especially when it comes to cars, but you seem to think they do.

I'm happy with the salesman. He suggested we wait a couple more days for delivery so we got a car 'off the transporter' rather than driven down from Chiang Rai, saved us 80k on a roller cover and now recommends we don't buy an accessory that in his experience will probably damage our paint. He's been good with other things we've asked him with too. Sorry your experience with your car dealer hasn't been up to scratch.

I got the bug deflector and wind deflectors, as well as a a few other goodies for free and I wouldn't have had them fitted if I thought they damaged the paint, and I've never heard anyone actually advising against them before, but if you worry about it don't get them. If you imagine that nearly every car in Thailand has at least the window deflectors and probably 50% of pickups have the bug deflectors I don't think it's a problem.

ive had a few cars in thailand and all of them had the bug deflector and the window thingy and no paint has ever been damaged from it. Only idiots with shopping carts, idiots that dont know the difference between moving forward and backing up and rocks.
