Yes, You need a visa to enter.

Not so sure that's the case. If you're a G-7 passport holder, you can go over for the day, for either a 500 baht, or ten US dollar fee, with no visa. I did this, with absolutely no problem, twice, during the second half of October, which was less than two months ago. Some folks MIGHT be able to go over for free, with no visa. ( Reason I'm aware of this, is that part of the group I was with in Mai Sai were traveling on Philippine passports. The Burma immigration guy that had just processed me, said to them, "Oh, our friends from a fellow Asean nation, no charge fee, welcome!" And they got to go over to the Tachilik market for a day, for no cost, at all! They just got stamped out of the LOS, and into Burma for the day, then stamped out of Burma several hrs later, and then stamped back into the LOS, for another 15 days, with no expense.

Are you sure eVisas are valid at all points of entry not specific airports? The website says Yangon, Mandalay and Nap Pyi Taw airports are the only eVisa points of entry. Is that incorrect information? OP said he/she was going by land, right? And how do you know he/she is not from one of the seven visa exempt nations when he/she makes no mention of it?

This may well be the case, since I did many visa runs ( border runs ) before to Ranong and "victoria point" ( koh song ) and for a new ! note of 10 Dollars you can still stay for 2 weeks. Probably also possible over there. Maybe check online with the visa run companies.

I've got a USA passport so looks like i am G7 and will be welcome. I will just pop over to Tachileik without visa but with crisp US$10 in hand and find out. Gotta wonder what i will find there.

I went across about 6 months ago for the day. Great fun. Lots of fantastic shopping. But buyer beware. Lots of dodgy knockoffs. They look great, but fall apart rather quickly.

No visa needed to just go across for a bit and check out the sites. You'll need a full visa to travel further, which is actually prohibited past a certain point, unless you fly.

Have fun! We enjoyed our day there.

When you make this day trip across the boarder and pay your $10.00, do you need to get a Thai reentry paper before you go?

My understanding is yes.
