Hey guys,

I've been a long time fan of Mercedes-Benz... at the same time I'm budget conscious...

Lately I've been looking to get an older...2007/8 a170 w169 mb...

Sure it doesn't look as beautiful as the newer mbs... but can't complain for the price...

Ultimately I enjoy the spacious feel for a compact... build quality, safety and a tiny bit of badge power... although this car is more cute than a status symbol...

Anyway... it's either this or a newer small call.. say... chevy cruze... or altis, vios... attrage etc...

I love meddling with cars and don't mind tinkering... wanted to know if anyone has a good place to service older MBs? Cheaper but reliable would be great... or if any of you out there currently drive this car that would be awesome to get some personal feedback before I make the purchase in a week or so..

Still shopping around...

Thanks guys!

Please keep to the topic of older MB ownership/maintenance in bangkok... preferably with regards to this model or at least similar. In age etc...

I know it's a long shot but... you never know till you ask right?

I'm looking for a project Benz....50s 170 Ponton.......pretty hard to come by, but actually found one in Bang Chak in BKK 2 days ago......lots of work of course, but doable...the Thai owner want's too much, probably 'cos I'm a farang!...anyway....I'll keep at him!

Agree they are all doable but depends where you want to go with it. Rebuild to use daily or restore to drive once a month and admire the rest of the time.

Cost difference is vast.

Replacement of original instruments in the dash is 20 to 30 times the price of using locally sourced other make instruments.

Some engine parts have to be originals, expensive plus 30% import.

As said, what do you intend for the finished job.

Why are you concerned regarding the KM reading.

Just tell the seller what reading you would prefer and all will be arranged.

I never paid much tax on parts when I restored an old motorbike. I think the only tax I ever paid was 500b for a fully restored set of carbs which were worth around $500.

Ordering parts for a car seems to attract more attention. Paypal add the import to the price before you buy. UPS make up their own, there is a thread on it somewhere.

I just received 7 various filters for my BMW from the UK and had them sent by Parcel Force. I was charged zero for import duty.

I am the one who decides what figure will go on the customs declaration as they are sent by my daughter from the post office.

If they do not agree on the amount given they will make you pay some duty but I have never found what they charge to be way overboard.

If the items are being sent by courier that's a different ball game.

altho.. i would greatly appreciate anyone with a reliable yet not too expensive mercedes benz workshop around sukhumvit area (bangkok).

You're talking about 'Benz' in Thailand. Don't forget it's classed as a HI-SO vehicle. You will need to do some searching around and it takes time to find a 'like mind' that wants to help you.

You can find second hand bits and peices in BangNa at Chiang Kong, nearest I can do to the name.

Not easy to deal with them though. I was looking for two headlights, found them but was only offered them if I bought the two front wings and bonnet at the same time. I did eventually get them but I was lucky because I found a rear end write off in a local shop.

I'll try and find some e mail addresses for you.

Give me a couple of days.
