Surin Beach demolition stalled yet again

PHUKET: -- The expected end-of-year demolition of buildings on Surin Beach has been delayed, according to Phuket Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat.

“There are many documents that the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization [PPAO] need to review and prepare before demolition begins, as some of the buildings at Surin were built by the government,” Vice Governor Chokdee told the Phuket Gazette. “There will be an official announcement from Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada on this issue in January.”

Earlier this month, V/Gov Chokdee vowed that all buildings would be demolished by the new year, pending the signature of Watcharin Patomwattanapong, acting chief of the PPAO, on some important documents granting permission to destroy a number of buildings owned by the government organization.

Ah yes. The good old review and prepare the paperwork excuse.

Only paperwork they are interested in is the grey variety.

A bit more time needed for the brown paper bags to be adequately filled.

What a load of bullshit that is,,,anything on the beaches in the whole country is illegal,they don't need any paperwork for that.One word from the Government (that is GO) and they can bulldoze all the beaches clean in the whole country.

Peak peak high season ... so much money to be fleeced made from the tourists. Just give us a few more months ,...

Considering who made the recent announcement (a local mayor) of demolition of the obnoxious Surin Beach clubs and whatnot, did anyone really expect it to happen?

Impressive. There is actually a governor in charge of Vice in Phuket.

Peak peak high season ... so much money to be fleeced made from the tourists. Just give us a few more months ,...

That's really it. That OrBorTor is the worst and there is a direct pipeline from the all the business there, into his pocket and it works itself up from there.

To be honest, it's a great idea to tear down all those businesses but let's get serious, not during high season. I think the prior announcements to demolish was just to get the price up.

This decision surprises no one.

PHUKET: -- Vice Governor Chokdee Armornwat has confirmed that the demolition of the buildings along the Surin beachfront, on Phuket’s west coast, will not happen before New Year’s Day.

The December 31 deadline was first warned by V/Gov Chokdee himself only earlier this month.

Then Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada only nine days later, on December 11, warned that the mass demolitions “must” be carried out by the new year.

Yet, V/Gov Chokdee today (Dec 21) said that the mass razing will not happen before the self-set deadline – as bureaucrats have yet to complete the “formalisation of approvals” required in order to carry out the demolitions.

“We have the manpower from both the Royal Thai Navy and the Cherng Talay OrBorTor (Tambon Administration Organisation) are ready to carry out the demolitions, but we have to wait for another official approval from PPAO,” V/Gov Chokdee said.

“But we still have to wait for written confirmation from the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) that the legal process is complete and that their buildings along the beachfront can be taken down.”

Meanwhile, the PPAO in turn is waiting on a letter from the Cherng Talay OrBorTor confirming that the buildings can now be torn down.

But could happen on January 1. Happy New years.

Threatening to demolish right before the peak peak season makes for a strong negotiating side.

If you're a tourist, would you want to have a whole load of demolition going on behind you when you're trying to relax on the beach? And then have to put up with an eyesore as no doubt a completely different organisation would have to arrange the clean-up?

Right decision not to do it now, but for all the wrong reasons! If it needs to be done, wait until April.
