192 migrants rounded up in South in week to Christmas

BANGKOK: The Sixth Immigration Police Bureau yesterday announced the arrest of some 192 illegal migrant workers in the week up to Christmas in the 14 southern provinces.

Pol Colonel Pakapong Sai-ubon, superintendent at the bureau, told the press that 120 migrants face the charge of illegal entry according to the Immigration Act 1979. Some 70 others faced charges of working in Thailand without permission or working in the wrong category from what their employers registered them in. Two other two migrants were arrested due to arrest warrants: one for a rape of a minor, the other for fraud, he said.

The operations were according to the Immigration chief Police Major General Natthorn Phrosunthorn's policy to get strict on law-breaking migrants. He urged people in the South to provide leads about foreigners and migrants who do wrong via 08-1658-8448 (24 hours).

If history prevails, the 120 migrants will be jailed while facing the charge of illegal entry. Then within days they will mysteriously disappear during the night en mass, never to be found again.
