PHUKET: -- Phuket and Krabi Marine Police are ramping up safety checks in order to get tour operators to comply strictly with marine regulations.

The boost comes hard on the heels of the death of a French tourist who was killed last week after being struck in the head by a speedboat propeller while snorkelling near Poda Island (story here).

Phuket Marine Police have already checked the documentation and condition of tour boats and staff at several tourist spots.

All show and no real action - BS ...

Not really true. Slowly, slowly progress has been made over the years.

Is it bash Phuket Day? So far I have read about the female hurled from her bike & robbed of 100,00 bahtsworth; a German run over and killed; now this unfortunate French tourist. Why does anybody still go to Mafia Island?
