Going nowhere: Refugees stuck at Greece-Macedonian border

Hundreds of migrants and refugees remain stranded between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with intermittent border closures and regulations hampering their journey to a new life.

Only Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans are deemed eligible to get through in the first place but even these groups now need to have extra, essential paperwork about their destination.

“In addition to all the identification and registration paperwork, they now have to register at the police cabin at the end of their stay at this camp and state their destination country,” said Gemma Gillie of the humanitarian organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders.

“They then take that paper to the border, and the police at the border will check it. And unless it says Germany or Austria, they are not allowed to cross into FYROM. So even if they are Syrian, Afghan or Iraqi nationals, if it does not say Germany or Austria, they are turned back from the border.”

Things could get harsher still for those fleeing war zones if Hungary’s leader has his way.

Having already fenced off his own country’s borders, Viktor Orban now wants Macedonian and Bulgarian authorities to do the same on their border with Greece to curb the inflow of migrants into Europe.

Ok. So if they state that their destination country is Mongolia, then they will not be allowed to continue to Germany or Austria. Makes sense in a most basic, fundamental and logical way.

I guess they have lost all sympathy from Europeans. They must have worked hard to find some old woman. It's normally a majority men.

Thats why mainstream news is really the emotional news network. There is always an increasingly overt manipulation that takes place in the selection and presentation of news. Without question media is the second pillar of liberal social engineering (politics is the first). This sick photo is no more than an appeal to emotion. Everyone has long ago realized that finding pictures of old people, children, or women are the exceptions in this debacle. Clearly this picture was framed for angle, background, and height- to have the men secondary in the background. You can tell the males attention is fixated on the photographer as over time he carefully surveyed lighting, checked viewfinder, dropped to knee, moved left, right, up, down, until he had the perfect picture not of the people but of the narrative the photographer wished to traffic. Inches from the old gal's face she would have had to be instructed to woefully look off to an imaginary point in the distance while he snapped the camera. No spontaneous image here.

You can nearly palpate the politics of the photographer through the image; thick, muddled, manipulative, emotional, and predatory. Thankfully the author has an unguarded moment and reveals what many of us have been saying all along, these are not all refugees... "Hundreds of migrants and refugees..." (Bold added).

Another story that is filled with tragedy. I do feel sorry for these people suffering in the Winter weather.

I do not feel sorry for all of those young looking men who are running away from their country, and

not fighting for their lives. I think this situation is only going to get worse, as the people smugglers are

still bringing even more people to Greece, and Turkey, and more people are going to die before the Winter is over.

It is too bad that there is not some warmer place in the Middle East where these people could go and stay

and be safe until at least they can go back to where they are from. The idea of them all going to somewhere in

Europe is the worst solution as Europe is already not doing well in a lot of their country and these extra

refugees and migrants will do more harm than help to Europe. That is my opinion at least.

I agree that the world should see a more honest reporting from all of the media, and not the heart ache

pictures and partial stories that we get to hear and read about.
