Thai 2017 election to take place even if constitution does not pass referendum - PM

BANGKOK: -- Thailand will hold a general election in 2017 even if a draft constitution does not pass a referendum this year, the prime minister said on Tuesday.

"No matter whether the draft constitution passes the referendum or not, the government will hold the election in 2017 according to our roadmap," Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters.

A May 2014 coup ended months of political protests in Bangkok and the military tore up the previous constitution.

This sounds like either incomplete reporting or the PM engaging mouth before brain (again!!). Under what constitution can a valid election be held? Can the new constitution be approved under S44 even if rejected by the people? The only other course would seem to be to reinstate an old constitution... in other words, back to square one.

That begs the question which charter is going to be used to hold those elections, and subsequent formation of a government and the parameters under which that government can actually function.

Seems no thought has gone into that statement at all.

There are some screws missing here. If the new constitution is not passed, under what provisions of the interim constitution can a general election held? If the interim constitution is scrapped, then Thailand will have no constitution. Reverting to the previous constitution is not the answer because the 'old' constitution would then be a new constitution.

He must expect all the real reforms to be completed by then... the Shins will all be charged with something, anything by then.

Dont know why he just doesnt have them charged with being more popular than the military and their puppets governments.

At the heart of the fractious politics is rivalry between the Bangkok-based royalist-military establishment and populist former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his allies, who the establishment sees as a threat.

this isn't really about Thaksin and his fight with the other elites. That is a side-show. This is about the sovereignty of the Thai people.

"I promise that in July 2017 there will definitely be an election."

does it need to be pointed out that he also said,

- there will be no coup

- I don't want to be PM

- elections in September 2015

He is making it up as he goes along... Just pure BS.

Possibly Rtd General Prayut - O is now finding out that to have Coup not necessarily fixes problems but creates more, the coup leaders in 06 couldn't hand over to a caretaker government fast enough when the backlash from the international community got to hot, what with all those promises of a new constitution, high speed trains and what not, the only B/S you have now discovered is your own, perhaps you have an inkling of what might occur if you don't hand back control to a democratically elected government , it might not effect you sir but the good people of Thailand deserve better than what you have delivered , and international trade embargos , only hurt the people, as you repeatedly said at the beginning , there will be no Coup , pity you never keep your word general............................................coffee1.gif

PM reaffirms election to be held in July next year no matter what

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha reaffirmed on Tuesday that election would go ahead in accordance with the government’s roadmap even if the current draft constitution is shot down in a referendum.

He said that he had a plan in his mind about what to do if the draft charter fails to be approved in the referendum.

But when asked whether the B.E. 2015 interim charter will be revived to replace the draft charter in case the draft is rejected as indicated by Mr Meechai Ruchuphan, head of the Constitution Drafting Committee, the prime minister was evasive, saying only that he could figure out what to do.

According to the roadmap, the next election is to take place in July next year, said the prime minister, adding that he was determined to keep the roadmap unchanged and to make the election a reality.

He shot back at reporters asking them whether they don’t want the draft charter to be endorsed in the referendum.

The prime minister maintained that he didn’t care the politicians whether they like to election to be held in July next year or not. What he really cares, he said, is the people.

Nothing shows caring for the people more than taking away basic human and democratic rights. Or detain them without even an arrest warrant. Or sentencing people for liking Facebook posts.

So there will be an election, and which charter is going to be used for that is unclear, but fear not as the one who cares for the people knows what to do.

Hey, general, reporters ask the questions, ... that is their job. Self-appointed "prime ministers" answer the questions, ... don't look now, but that is YOUR job.

The (self-appointed) prime minister maintained that he didn’t care the politicians whether they like to election to be held in July next year or not. What he really cares, he said, is the people.

Now, general, no one is gonna believe you ever again if you keep telling whoppers like that one... you ol' "democratic soldier", you.... coffee1.gif

He is only following orders and breaking promises as he goes along. However this July 2017 election may be the real deal. It just show that the elites intolerance threshold have been reached and their pockets are hurting. They now willing to abandon their reform attempts to save their skins or their wealth even at the expense of risking into an unknown sphere if the charter is voted out which I think will happen. Well unless the junta has something up their sleeves to ensure the charter sail through like the did in 2007.

Constitution, what is that? The U.S. has had its revered Constitution since the 1780's or so, Sweden's first Constitution can be traced back to 1634. Britain has an "unwritten" constitution. The one common thing with these are that they are never scrapped and replaced. They are the foundation upon which laws are made. They can be amended at times but never scrapped.

What the Thai present and past govt.'s are touting as "Constitutions" are just garbage. There has never been and will never be a constitution in Thailand, the train for that left sometime just after the second world war, or maybe sometime just before the war. Just forget about the stupid "canstatootion" and get on with law and govt, and elections.

Mr. Somchai and his farmer neighbor Mr. Preecha somewhere in Nakhon Nowhere will be overwhelmed with happiness once the Constitution is passed, they will certainly benefit immensely from it.
