Video: Man shot dead during robbery gone wrong in Hat Yai

SONGKHLA:-- A 38 year old man was shot dead as he tried to rob a jewellery store in Hat Yai during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The deceased man, who police identified as Mr Somsak Phethong, broke into Hanphet PV Jewellery shop in Hat Yai town centre as the owners were sleeping upstairs.

The owner of the shop, former policeman Mr Wichai Wannawong told police that his brother, who was also staying at the premises was woken just after 3am by noise coming from the jewellery shop downstairs.

On hearing the noise, Mr Wichai’s younger brother, Mr Boonyakorn Chanswang, 45, went downstairs to investigate and saw the intruder inside the shop.

Mr Wichai then said the intruder attacked his brother with a screwdriver and in defence, Mr Boonyakorn shot the man three times as he tried to escape.

The whole incident was captured on CCTV.

Khaosod reports that upon attending the scene officers from Hat Yai police station found the victim’s body in the stairwell of the jewellery shop alongside a bag containing what was believed to be stolen jewellery.

Police believe the victim had been responsible for a number of robberies at other jewellery shops throughout Hat Yai, which had resulted in the theft of gold and other valuables totalling more than one million Baht.

Police are analysing the CCTV footage of the robbery, along with that of the other robberies as they continue to investigate the incident.

Brazen! The chance of a jewellery shop owner in Had Yai not having a gun on the premises is as close to nil as you can get.

Another low life taken out for good, and it did cost only approx. 50 baht for the bullets - great!!!!

Is it legal to shoot a burglar, within the Thai law, when he runs away?

It looks like the intruder went down the stairs and could have gotten away but instead turned around and came back up the stairs. Bad choice on his part. But can Thais legally own guns in their houses?

Yes, you can get a permit from the Amphur. The best way is to have a well connected police officer walk you through it.

He did not try to escape. He came back up the stairs to attack the owners whom he had already attacked before

Most cops in the US have the ability to properly process a crime scene..., act with integrity, (look that word up in a Thai dictionary) and write reports honestly....

In the US, you have a legal right to protect your life, another life that is in danger and your personal property.

There are also good Samaritan laws in the US which protect you if you help another in need. Find that law in the Thai legal code.

I believe you need a work permit for a fallung to get a permit to keep a gun at home. Civilians can only own a .38 cal, max. or a shotgun. Police and military can get .45s or .357s. I am told.

That is probably correct. When you say most cops in the US, I assume you are talking about most detectives. Yes, the detectives in the US, and probably in most European countries get good training, from experts in their fields. I cannot even begin to imagine who trains Thai police detectives. The term is almost oxymoronic. Hard to even begin to imagine a Thai police detective having been trained properly by experts, and being able or willing to process a crime scene properly (think Dark Tao). I would imagine there are nearly always other factors they take into account, such as politics, the power and wealth of the perpetrator, etc. The lack of talent on the part of the police force here is astonishing. The lack of motivation to do their jobs properly is also. And lastly, the lack of concern for the public good, and for public safety and welfare.

Having said all that, I doubt there are many that are sympathetic to this robbers plight. You break into a mans shop, threaten his livelihood, and his safety, and you get what is coming to you, in a story that has a happy ending, such as this one. Perhaps his mom has some sorrow at the outcome. But, she also has to accept some responsibility for raising a man child, who cannot distinguish right from wrong, and is a numskull. One more idiot bites the dust. So what?
