MYANMAR -- Myanmar’s election-winning party, the National League for Democracy, is preparing to form a government and take charge of the country.

The party’s leader, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, paid tribute to the outgoing regime, which is dominated by the military, for facilitating a smooth transition to what will be the first democratically elected government in decades:

“I would like to welcome the new members of parliament. In the meantime I would like to congratulate the old members for the work they’ve done. The way forward for the new members is now much clearer.”

Although Suu Kyi remains a powerful figure the constitution bars her from the presidency because her late husband was British and her sons are not Myanmar citizens.

The NLD won a landslide victory in last November’s election, although because of a change in the constitution in 2008 the military will still control a quarter of the seats in parliament.

The first sitting of the new government is due to take place on Monday.

History being made. Congratulations to Aung San Suu Kyi for making this happen.

Congratulations, now comes the change. Thailand better start getting it's act sorted out pretty soon, before Burma takes all the glory.

Congrat's on becoming a Democratic country again. Hope it lasts for the next 1000 years. Now if only it's neighbors could do the same thing.

Just watch for the investments; to start pouring in.

"generals hand over power"

Like Thailand, Myanmar generals don't really hand over power, they just rescind their power. Power that they feel free to exercise at a time and place of their own choosing. To truly hand over power would require "the proper subordination of a ... military to the ends of policy as determined by civilian authority."1 Both military consider themselves a state within a state with sovereignty superior to the people's sovereignty.

Why was this buried near the bottom of the list of news topics ? WAY more important than many of the other highlighted stories above it in the list.

They put back the Elections I hear.

We will be ^oo^you. First wrong move and we will take back power and say "we told you so democracy does not work" Yingluck you now will have company.

Amazing how many of the "Knock Thailand" Group are shouting the odds of, "watch out Thailand, Myanmar is going overtake you. I would strongly suggest that first you study the wonderful current infra structure of Myanmar, also where Myanmar lies on the Corruption Perception Table. I don't think Thailand needs to worry about this very, very backward and incredibly corrupt Country for sometime to come, if ever. Wake up dreamers!!coffee1.gif
