Alongkorn: Thailand won't move forward if conflicts continue

BANGKOK, 30 January 2016 (NNT) - A deputy speaker of the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) said yesterday that the country will never move forward should social and political conflicts drag on.

First deputy speaker of the NRSA, Alongkorn Ponlaboot said Thailand must achieve unity and reconciliation by the end of this year, while expressing his belief that each side in the simmering conflict will finally come to realize that the country will slip backwards if conflicts are allowed to continue.

He said the five rivers of reform have been working hard to foster understanding, unity, and reconciliation among differing groups.

Within the next 5-6 months, he said the NRSA will summon representatives from various groups and will discuss with them a mechanism for achieving reform, unity, and reconciliation.

He also urged all political parties to reform themselves ahead of the general election in order to regain the confidence of the Thai people.

Would be interested to hear what the reconciliation people have been doing for the past 2 years, and why they need to wait a further 5-6 months before speaking to different groups representatives. I would of thought that idea gathering and understanding the differing opinions would have been one of the first things done, not 2.5 years later, possibly after the referendum on a new Constitution.

More cynical people looking at the non steps taken so far would question whether there is any intention at all for reconciliation, or reconciliation for the people in charge basically means 'shut up' and suck it up we have power now, and we will do our damnedest to ensure we keep it indefinitely.

How the hell will reconciliation take place when it's clear that the Junta have a plan to punish and destroy Peu Thai?

The people who voted for PT will not be satisfied with anything other than the chance to vote again for their preferred candidates.

Until the Junta understand this and allow free elections to take place they are just wasting time.

"all political parties to reform themselves ahead of the general election in order to regain the confidence of the Thai people."

Does he know the general election date has now been delayed to the end of 2017 due to a still-flawed draft charter?

Seeing as only the NCPO has control over the draft process, the NCPO must take responsibility for the country not moving forward.

We all know this , what we want to know and is on everybody's lips , has the Coup actually achieved anything, the answer to that lies in HK , and it is doubtful that any reconciliation will be attained whilst the Junta continues on a path of confrontation........................................coffee1.gif

Many people today agree that we need to reduce violence in our

society. If we are truly serious about this, we must deal with the

roots of violence, particularly those that exist within each of us. We

need to embrace 'inner disarmament,' reducing our own emotions of

suspicion, hatred and hostility toward our brothers and sisters.

― Dalai Lama XIV

Anyone see any chance of this??

How can you have reconciliation when groups of more than 5 people are not allowed to meet ?

Alongkorn: Thailand won't move forward if conflicts continue

well, since the government is generating new conflicts like once a month (park scandal, internet censorship/restrictions, response to criticism/caricatures,...) the move forward towards elections and democracy has been stifled and excused at the same time. Quite a sophisticated measure.

And Pheu Thai and the person who owns it have no intention of changing or will be satisfied with anything less than total control either.

Free elections - just watch what happens when PT loose one. Like they did at a number of by-elections, even the "safe" Don Meuang seat. Every dirty trick and contrived law suit comes out to try and get the result nullified. PT like elections as long as they like the result. Provides a smear of democracy.

And so the cycle continues.

Any attempt to eliminate political conflict is foolish. It is an essential aspect of democratic forms of government.

The goal is to channel conflict into non- violent forums.

The current regime represses these efforts when they include opposition points of view.

I'm not thinking the junta (and others) is interested in resolving conflict. It has been so useful as a pretext for action.
