Less Farang Living In LOS?

Thailand has made it quite clear it isn't interested in foreigners staying here long term. It wants the two week holiday maker now.

I disagree .

There are long term visas available and Thailand wants people to stay here on the correct visa .

Quite understandably, Thailand doesnt want foreigners living here full time on tourist visas .

If you have a valid reason for staying in Thailand then there are visas available

I agree.

Thailand is weeding out the cheaters who have abused the system.

Those with valid reasons to be here and the means to meet the requirements to live here are doing fine.

Could it be that many foreigners ( like me ) are here to experience thailand, the people and the culture and do their best to avoid other foreigners?

I am very happy hanging out with my Thai friends and family.

I've Also had my fill of western ways and attitudes.

We are hiding from you!cheesy.gif

Thailand is less appealing these days to the two week Pattaya hedonistic set holiday people .

Bars close early these days and porn is freely available back home, along with big screen HD televisions , webcam chats are also available at a reasonable price , so there really is no need to fly half way around the World for "a night out"

So a good webcam chat beats a "night out".

Have to disagree with you there.

Like saying I don't need that nice car I am a picture of it on my phone.

But is it worth flying all the way around the World, just to have a quick drive in that car .

That souped up Ford Escort MK 3 may have been a dream drive 20 years ago , but that same motor is still there, available for a test drive .

Although it is showing signs of wear & tear . Some rust, deflated tyres and still quite expensive to fill it up with a full tank

I guess it all depends on the car.. More a Sierra guy myself.. Don't mind if it's 4wd or 2wd as long as it's got a blower. They look good in pics but nothing beats thrashing one.

Well now I have noticed nothing of the sort here in the South,We go into the town and sometimes we see 1 or 2 Westerners at the most 3, that has not changed over the last 4 years .I like it this way,,, We don't have to Mingle with to many Westerners,,,Just the way we like it . 1 or 2 Friends is Fine . Love it !

I know a few people like yourself and I really cant make it out.

Why do people who have no wish meeting fellow Westerners in real life spend much of their spare time conversing with them online ?

Seriously I don't get it.

Because they get bored senseless watching the chickens runaround while the Thai family are ignoring them.

Real life can get overly messy and people can be too needy. Online it is easier to get what you want without all the cumbersome and unnecessary bits. You are exposed to a much broader assortment of individuals and can sort through them much more quickly. You are not burdened with unattractive people who smoke or drink or have annoying behavioral habits. You can come and go as you please without having to make excuses. Whats not to like?

Inability to mix in with others. Harder to BS about the 'happy life' they lead, or financial status when face to face with someone. So many keyboard millionaires on here, probably, without a pot to piss in.

One of only a handful of reasons why any farang would rule out interaction with other farangs is an intrinsic fear of being instantly identified as a tool/dullard/faker.

I don't shun any anyone based on their being a foreigner - why not just take people as individuals?

I have noticed that the ThaiVisa forums have an inordinate number of professionals....most predominantly investment wizards with intricate knowledge of the global monetary system; but also a large number of highly skilled engineers, biologists, epidemiologists, automotive technicians, Special Forces/SAS/ninjas, and what have you.

I appreciate people sharing their knowledge and experiences here...but some do get a bit carried away with touting their "credentials".

Edit: It is a shame that more people didn't experience Thailand as it was 20 - 30 years ago.

Then, perhaps they could better understand where you are coming from.

I cannot help smirking . When I first came to Thailand 20 odd years ago, I went to Ko Samui and there was an older felang sitting in a bar, nearly in tears , turns out that he was really upset " What has happened to this lovely island............I came here 10 years ago, before the airport and it was beautiful,...now look at it, its ruined"

Every place that I go to, there seems to someone telling how much better it was 5 years, 10 years ago .

Horrendous pollution which stuck to you, no ATMx, no 7/11s , no live sport , no roads on the islands , Post restantes for letters and Post offices for phone calls back home . Baht wasnt a stable currency and all flight tickets had to be paid in hard currency with cash at travel agents....................yeah, the good old days

That to me was part of what made Thailand so much of an appeal. Somewhere where there was a little chaos introduced into your life, in a relatively safe environment where you actually had to think for yourself.

Somewhere away from the land of everything available or done for you.

That and the parties.....................wink.png

Everyone is different i think it is safe to say......................rolleyes.gif

I can see where the old guy on Samui was coming from 20 odd years ago.

So, I trust that you dont use 7/11s, only Mon&Pop shops , only get letters sent to Post restantes and only use telephones at post offices , never use ATMs and never watch live sport back from back home

I find that generally those who actually have any skills or credentials tend to keep quiet about them.

I'm not sure on that, most expats I know in Thailand have their qualifications, skills and experience plastered all over linkedIn.

I'm reluctant to make a judgement on the expats I don't know.

You want to see new faces? Go to Chiang Mai Immigration just about any day of the week! As far as I'm concerned, there are too damn many of them now! cheesy.gif

No S*%t ....I've been living south of the city(Mai Hia) for over 10 years and amazed at the influx of farang over the last 3yrs. out this way.

At the fresh market on a sunday I could imagine to be somewhere in middle America....couples young, old, mixed & matched, full families and large groups all shapes and sizes...here for reasons of their own.

ChiangMai has been discovered!

Live sport (football) was there even in those days, with better coverage than UK, broadcasting from Malaysia & Singapore.

Even today, i rarely use 7/11's (truth) and only then if necessary, nothing wrong with Mom & Pop shops for what i need.

Back then, i had no real need for telephones or mail while on holiday, but since i migrated here in 1997 both services have been good. i do have to say that through advancing technology (and I'm all for it!) it has changed the way we exist, the way we act and having the unfounded impression that it is vital to our well being and that we have it available 24/7.

You never think for a moment what it would be like to switch it all off for a couple of days? Turn the phones, tablets, notebooks, PCs, find yourself a quiet spot and mellow out. No need for selfies, no need to ask the person 20 feet away from you by text what they're up to. Practice speech again?

Just for clarity, I'm not a dinosaur and have enjoyed the way things have changed (mostly). I've seen the wild side and am now enjoying a normal married working life here in Thailand.

But i would like to be away from batteries & power sockets every now and again............................wink.png

Despite all the things you mention, yes, they were the good old days. I definitely preferred the place before wall to wall English Premier League took over every bar. I think you have to be very old indeed to remember Thailand without 7/11.

I too first experienced Koh Samui well before the airport and the change over a short period of time was indeed horrifying in many ways. The trouble is it is happening everywhere, and not just in Thailand.

All this bitching - I've been here almost 30 years, have no intention of ever leaving, and have encountered no hostility at all.

Thank you for saying it, for me exactly the same

Hostility, be it passive aggressive or outright aggressive (not so common) is something I've learnt to live with here.

But the decent people outweigh them by 3/1 or more.

He's not the problem, its people like you who take offence to everyone and everything that don't follow your PC mantra who are the problem with the world in the C21.

How i long for the times when people could say and do as they pleased without being branded a nazi, homophobe, racist, sexist etc...., your kind have created a situation where you're looking out to be offended on a minutely basis .. And you move to Thailand to spread this disease,

You wouldn't be longing for

those days if you'd spent

any length of time being

attacked for the colour of

your skin, your faith or your

sexual orientation.

Ah ha. People on this site will unmercifully attack people of faith while chastising others for being whatever. People at least need to be consistent.

I guess it just depends on whose ox is gored, eh?

Cheers.

Yes, I would agree.

Just out of my fairly small social circle, there are 5 friends/acquaintances who have left Thailand. Two were here on ED visas and couldn't get them renewed. One was a guy who had lived in Thailand on tourist visas for years and the other two were teachers who didn't have degrees (and who were also on here on tourist visas).

Thailand has made it quite clear it isn't interested in foreigners staying here long term. It wants the two week holiday maker now.

You miss the obvious point which is highlighted by the characteristics you mention of the acquaintances you mention who have left Thailand. In other words Thailand is becoming a less friendly place for foreigners who are poorly qualified and have no particular reason to be here.

What a snob. How about:

"Thailand is becoming a less friendly place for foreigners who are cashed up and qualified to live in their home countries?"

"Thailand is becoming a less friendly place for foreigners who can't qualify for a long term stay?

"Thailand is becoming a less friendly place for foreigners who are able to live anywhere in the world they want to?"

"Thailand is becoming a less friendly place for foreigners who aren't sexpats?"

"Thailand is becoming a less friendly place for foreigners who lost everything to a bar girl?"

Cheers.

Everything changes. Otherwise we'd still be living in caves and bashing antelopes over the head with clubs.

x

I like it!

Change is good but some have problems adjusting.

Especially when the change is an increase in cost and one starts running out of money.

Then there are a whole lot of reasons they start to concoct to express their dislike for a place.

The myth that the term 'farang' is/should be reserved exclusively to describe those with white skin is promulgated by Thai-bashing racists who justify their Thai-bashing and racist attitudes by claiming in part that Thais are themselves racists, and that 'farang' is a racist term. The fact is that almost universally Thais use the term 'farang' to describe all Western foreigners, irrespective of skin color.

Your despicable attempt to draw attention to another poster's skin color to suggest they don't 'qualify' to self-describe as 'farang,' at the same time that you repeatedly bash Thais for using this term because it is supposedly a racist term, reveals unbelievable hypocrisy and racism on your part.
