Airports of Thailand board resigns due to country's political changes

BANGKOK (XFN-ASIA) - The board of directors of Airports of Thailand has resigned, less than one month after the opening of Bangkok's new international airport, the company said in a statement.

AOT said in a statement that all of its 14 board members have resigned effective yesterday, citing 'the current changes in the country's top leadership'.

'It is good manners for the board to resign after these political changes, to pave way for the new leaders to appoint a new set of people to work with,' said Chaisak Angkasuwan, the head of the government's aviation department who is also an AOT board member.

A new board will be appointed within one month, he added.

The 3-bln-usd Suvarnabhumi airport officially opened on Sept 28, replacing Don Muang airport.

AOT president Chotisak Asapaviriya said the resignations are unlikely to affect the new airport's operations.

'The performance of the new airport is much better (than at its opening) and just minor problems remain,' Chotisak told Agence France-Presse.

Suvarnabhumi, located 25 kilometers east of Bangkok, is set to serve 45 mln passengers a year within the next five years.

I'm surprised that this news went... like a sweet bird in a blue sky. Without fuss.

I mean, it's enormous.

The line about "good manners" is so funny... and misleading.

A few members OK, but the whole board... This is definitly not thai way.

AOT must have been a really nice honey pot for the previous team.
