10,000 refugee children are missing, says Europol

THE HAGUE: -- It’s another tragic aspect of the migrants’ crisis: at least 10,000 unaccompanied child refugees have disappeared over the past two years after arriving in Europe, according to the EU’s criminal intelligence agency.

Many of these children are feared to have fallen into the hands of criminal groups.

In an interview with the Observer, the sister publication of the Guardian, Europol’s chief of staff, Brian Donald, said half of the missing children disappeared in Italy.

According to the agency, minors accounted for 27 percent of the refugees who arrived in Europe last year.

Europol warns that unaccompanied children are especially vulnerable to traffickers who exploit them for sex work and slavery.

Missing? maybe a few., but the rest miraculously became adults after getting to stay and choose to disappear.....

Without sounding too harsh i would point out some fact from Scandinavia. Their largest group of "refugees" is in the age group 15-18. with no papers to support it.

it has come out in the media that some of them have actually been trained to say they are 16 even if they are 19...... (very difficult to check without papers)

and why is that? treated as a minor, given automatic refugee status, and large benefit from the state.

Reading this story, scary propaganda

i would say it is a lot more to this story than any country or government would want to admit.

Doesn't only happen in Scandinavia.

Years ago, in Australia, many refugee claimant youths lowered their age to gain an advantage in the process. Wrist x-rays were used to try to confirm age, but it wasn't a very accurate method.

A number of these people later tried to get their residency documents changed because "a mistake had been made on the refugee application". (They were officially too young to get driver's licenses.)

Others wanted to change their name, and even nationality, because "someone" had made a mistake.

It may well be asylum seeker children with no documentation understate their age, but in places such as Germany, UK & Sweden they are subjected to physical medical assessment to try and ascertain their true age; no surprise this info is not reported in the media that some members access.

Examining the sexual organs of children

The Observer article talks to the EU’s criminal intelligence agency warning pan-European gangs are targeting minors for sex work and slavery. Hardly surprising given the high level of criminal activity for child prostitution, child pornography etc, especially in Eastern European States

Any person who is claiming to be an unaccompanied minor should be screened by medical personnel. As someone mentioned, that includes x-rays (in Hong Kong, it was of the leg bone, in Australia apparently it was the wrist bone). Dental exams and X rays are also a good way of ascertaining age.

Those claiming to be unaccompanied minors should never be turned lose with the adult asylum seekers. They are usually detained and kept in separate housing. They are children and they are subject to different rules about freedom of movement. Most developed countries do not allow children to wander from country to country without a parent or legal guardian.
