Jailed for joining ISIL – British woman gets six years after returning from Syria

LONDON: -- A twenty-six year-old British mother who took her toddler son to Syria has been jailed for six years for belonging to the jihadist group ISIL.

Tareena Shakil who is a former health worker from Birmingham in central England, is the first woman from the UK to return from the self-declared caliphate, to be convicted of the offence.

Shakil has denied joining ISIL saying she only wanted to live under Sharia law, but the court was shown photos of her posing in Syria under an ISIL flag. She’s also been convicted of encouraging acts of terrorism via social media.

“Tareena Shakil had self-radicalised by viewing extremist material on the internet, before leaving the UK,” said Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale.

“Our assessment is that she was not naïve. She had absolutely clear intentions when she left the UK, sending tweets encouraging the public to commit acts of terrorism here and then taking her young child to join Daesh (ISIL) in Syria.”

Photographs seized from her phone showed Shakil posing with a firearm and wearing an ISIL balaclava. Another showed a rucksack with the ISIL logo and a person holding a handgun. It’s thought the photos were taken while she was in Syria.

After changing her mind, Shakil who had spent three months in Syria, was arrested last year by counter-terrorism officers when she returned to Britain.

Security services estimate some 600 Britons have joined the ranks of ISIL and other militant groups in Syria and Iraq, many of them crossing via Turkey. About half are believed to have returned to Britain.

Hmm should be 60 years not 6 !

I agree and her family after the court hearing had the cheek to curse and swear to the waiting cameras that others who will/are or have fled to Syria to join IS should stay and not return to the UK.

I agree with them 110 % and while their at it they should piss off over there as well or be imprisoned for there words of hatred.

Six years for joining ISIS but what about taking her child. Endangering him and

depriving the child's father and grandparents from contact. Another six years to

run consecutively, sounds about right. coffee1.gif

So as a taxpayer I have to take care of her for six years? There must be an alternative that doesn't make me want to strangle the entire establishment and legal profession. A bullet in her head maybe?

6 years ,right, she will be out in about two and a half

She should be put to death. She committed an act of treason and encouraged terrorism. This makes me so angry that the UK isn't taking these crimes seriously enough. The reason the radicals are growing is because our liberal progressive society has no backbone. This will get a lot worse and a lot more innocent people will be killed before the UK government starts to get tough enough. It's too bad they don't toughen up now. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

About half are believed to have returned to Britain.

Three hundred IS recruits are "believed" to have returned to Britain? I am beginning to think Donald Trump, who wants to keep Muslim immigrants out to the US until better screening procedures have been put in place, is talking sense for once..

It beggars belief that hundreds of so-called Brits who deserted their homeland to join the world's most bloodthirsty terrorist organisation can slip back into the country they ratted on without anyone knowing who or where they are, let alone what kind of horrors they may be planning to inflict upon their former fellow citizens..

What kind of security system does Britain, never mind America, have in place if nobody in authority has the slightest idea how many potential jihadist "sleepers" are now embedded in towns and cities across the country, waiting for the signal to begin a wave of terrorist attacks?

The first duty of any government is the security of its people. Yet, despite an astonishing level of surveillance and intrusion into the lives of the indigenous population since the War on Terror was declared over a decade ago, our borders are patently as porous as blotting paper and our domestic security arrangements laughable.

With five million more displaced people from the Mediterranean war zones expected to head for Europe once the winter is over we urgently need to beef up vetting procedures and be a lot more selective about who we let it.

Would-be terrorists should not be the sole target. We need to think twice before allowing in other undesirables - such as the bigoted and misogynistic third world Muslim men who contemptuously wipe their feet on the "infidel" welcome mat. Their legacy includes the Christmas carnage in Cologne and the transformation of Sweden from the safest country for women into the rape capital of Europe.
