Clinton and Sanders 'tie' in Iowa for Democratic nomination

606x341_322975.jpg

DES MOINES: -- Hillary Clinton and top challenger Bernie Sanders have ended in a virtual tie in the Democratic contest for the Iowa presidential nomination.

With less than a percentage point between them neither side has officially claimed a victory.

For most of the evening Clinton had been slightly ahead but an unrelenting surge from the self-styled democratic socialist senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders has left everything in doubt.

With 93 percent of votes counted, Clinton was on 50.1 percent to Sanders’ 49.3 percent.

Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, who had trouble gaining any traction in the Democratic race, says he plans to suspend his campaign. He was in third place with 0.5 percent.

Clinton who is a former secretary of state needed a win in Iowa to prevent a potential two-state opening losing streak that would raise fresh questions about a candidate who was considered the clear front-runner just two months ago. Sanders is leading in polls in New Hampshire, the next state to hold a nominating contest.

A great start for Bernie. An even better start for America because it isn't about Bernie even though he is the 'real deal' it is what is best for the average American. That is what is important. The policies and a new fairer direction for the American People.

It makes little to no difference if Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders wins the democratic nomination, the Democrats will lose this election in an historic landslide. No one in their right mind would ever elect a socialist for president, and Hillary would be like re-electing Obama.

Oh nightrider (you do what that represents don't you?) you have it backward and Bernie is not a full blown socialist, as if you even know what that is. Better do a little research on who he is and what policies (the ones most Americans want) he supports. Nothing wrong with regulating capitalism, in fact as the last couple of decades have shown, without regulation the working person and small businesses will be stomped on. Damn sure nothing wrong with the rich and corporations paying their fair share which they have not done in many years. There is something very wrong being on the bottom of industrialized countries medical care, paying the highest costs and being the only one where people must rely on the real death panels, insurance companies. In other words, the only one without single payer or Medicare for all. His ideas are the same as the majority of Americans and the bugaboo of socialism went out with the red scare.

Well they certainly voted for Eisenhower and Bernie's policies are in line with Eisenhower's positions. Eisenhower had a Jewish background as well.

Oh sorry your just running the neocon Right Wing evil 'Socialist' rhetoric not actually commenting on vital Social policy changes America so desperately needs.

It does become tiresome when all that is discussed is Republicans afraid of the dark, less an imaginary bogey man gets them.

In 2008 they said Hillary was a shoe in for the nomination.

They were wrong, she lost.

Let's hope she does it again!

Not bad for an unelectable, 74 year old, Jewish socialist with bad hair!

Feel the Bern!

Remember this dangerous clown?

Someone has not had time to educate himself, and still believes the cold war propaganda about socialism.

America has been full of socialist programs for many decades and many don't even know it.

The military. Social Security, Medicare, even the good old NFL...all are socialism...

Have you considered night school?

The uninformed and uneducated are America's biggest enemies today.

By the way, Obama was elected by a majority of American voters who think he has done well twice.

They would probably elect Obama again if he could run.

Are you saying the majority of American voters are not in their right mind since you disagree with the majority?

Bernie himself has said,

"It's not about me. It is about us."

Well it's a better Iowa for Hillary than last time.

She knows how poor she did in Iowa in 2008 and as a result put much more effort and money into Iowa this time.

The results for her were not that much of an improvement considering how hard she tried this time.

He was not elected by a majority of all the voters. In 2012 turnout was 57.5% and he won by only 3.86%. Many voters stayed at home.

However, if he stood again and was re elected a third time, I would consider those that voted for him to be barking.

People who stay home and do not vote, are not voters!

This is also good example for the world - regarding democracy. It's messy, sure, but it's good for people like the Chinese (and others) to see how dynamic democracy can be. Thailand in particular. Heck, in Thailand there aren't town hall meetings nor TV debates prior to an election. It's just two parties, each putting forth their respective candidates, all of whom are required to toe the party line 100%. One big reason there isn't much campaigning in run-ups to Thai elections is the leaders expect everyone to know what the respective parties stand for - end of story. One big factor for why there are no real debates is: VIP Thais are so quick to get offended and quick to slap defamation-of-character lawsuits.

Let me guess, 4 years ago you were totally sure Romney and Ryan were gonna win in a landslide. Yes, the same R&R team that claimed they would shovel out billions more to the military than the military asked for. How would they have paid for it? Republicans never say how they would pay for things, but they're sure good at amassing loans and putting Americans deeper in debt.

btw, if Obama could run for a 3rd term (and if he wanted to), he would win again. I'd like to see Michelle Obama as the Democratic party's VP candidate. Have you seen Michelle speak? She's awesome.

I'm sick of "awesome" speakers in politics. I want someone that will leave the country better than when they found it, not someone that can speak well. Even I have to admit that Obama was an "awesome" speaker, but he's left the country worse than when he was elected. A great leader brings people together, not divides them.

Whenever the GOP wins anything, even if by a whisker, they declare it a mandate. It's both pathetic and funny. So, in Republican terminology his re-election was a mandate.

You need to look up the word majority.

And as someone else already said, a voter is someone who votes. If you don't show up at the poll you ain't a voter.

Do I really have to be so pedantic as to say a "majority of the people eligible to vote"? I'm sure most people understand that.
