PHUKET: Police are yet to confirm the cause of death of a German man who was found lifeless at his home in Rawai yesterday morning (Feb 12).

Police and rescue workers arrived were called to the home, in Soi Hayaek, near Chalong Circle, at 11am.

They arrived to find the body of the 47-year-old man crouching on the floor with his head on the bed, said Maj Thada Sodarat of the Chalong Police.

“We found no sign of assault or no injury on the body,” Maj Thada said.

“However, the body smelled strongly of alcohol and there were empty bottles of alcohol all over the house. We also saw some trace of vomit on the bed.”

Among the evidence present were empty bottles of Thai rice whiskey lao kao.

Paijit Buthchan, who said she was a friend of the man, told police in a statement that she stayed with the him from time time.

That stuff is lethal.

They make it themselves up in the North and its about 10 Baht for a small bottle .

Drink that regulary and you get a life expectancy of about three years .

I took one sip of it once and it was like paint thinner

And yet mild relaxants such as Kratom are criminalised whilst this poison is allowed to proliferate killing many Thais, let alone this German, each year. Every hospital keeps an antidote on hand for the admittance of anyone suspected of having drunk this toxic shit. Disgusting.

I have to say I feel more sorry for the Thais who know no better.

A ever repeated myth and not true by any means.

What you see on the table is a commercial product sold in many shops.

Yes it tastes awful and it gave me a good heartburn when I tried it once.

But only the farang is stupid enough to drink it undiluted. blink.png

Some of my neighbours survived it much longer than 3 years.

They always dilute with water, "Thai wine" gigglem.gif

It's as lethal as a daily dose of hard liquor/spirit/wodka.

It's a 40 percent ("80 proof"?) hard liquor from rice, not more not less.

The police obsession with cigarette butts, signs of a struggle and empty bottles that contained alcohol continues.

From these three cursory observations, the Thai police can determine immediately whether or not foul play took place. And not only that, they can get back to more profitable or less strenuous activities such as manning checkpoints or hiding in the police station playing with their smartphones.

"It's a 40 percent ("80 proof"?) hard liquor from rice, not more not less." - I do not share your confidence in the Thai lao kao manufacturing process when it comes to quality control.

I don't drink beer Chang, but not because it's from the same company.

Prefer another local brand.

Consequently you have to refrain to imported stuff only.

AND I also learn a lesson: it's not from rice, but from molasse (from sugar production) (following the manufacturer site).

You jeep on drinking regularly and lets see who is the stupid one .

There were a few Thai guys sitting around the village sharing a plastic bag full, drinking it straight and I got offered a little glass full, so I took a little sip.

One sip of that stuff is all Im ever going to drink,

Anyway, Cheers, drink up

Another one for www.FARANG-DEATHS.COM.

I'm updating the German, Swiss and Austrian guys who had to go.Keep it to up to date, please.

An American I know for a few years drank two big bottles a day when he lived in the wife's village.

Easy to blame Lao Khao. Still the possibility of foul play, don 't you think?

I think you are incorrect on what it is distilled from. Maybe the manufacturer's site is wrong. What you describe is rum, such as Sangsom.

A quick Google search turns up "Lao Khao, a potent rice whiskey made from distilled sahtoh". In the photo on the site is the same bottle as in the photo here.

Anyway, very sad the guy drank himself to death like that. RIP.

You make me think that the website is wrong.

I was more than astonished that is supposed to be from molasses.

Fell into the trap of gullibly believing the net wink.png?

Time for another "lao kao" thread tongue.png

I talked to some Issanians who refer to the stuff as yah-this and that. Some of them actually believe it cures certain ailments.

Ive even seen women drink the stuff straight up in the morning, thinking it somehow helps the monthly horrors.

I suppose you can feel sorry for them that others tell them this shlt and they actually believe it

My wife's father has been drinking half a bottle every day for 30 years,he is 71 years old now and has liver cancer but looks fit and still works in the fields and still drinks.

Lao Kao wash is made with sticky rice, sugar and yeast, fermented for a couple of weeks, then distilled. Asian backwoods distillation technique does not minimize the unwanted and poisonols (methanol, etc.), thus the nasty paint thinner taste, headaches and hangovers. In my village up north, alcohol percentage is consistently around 50% as measured with an alcohol meter. Thais flame test for proof.
