Court orders activist monk to pay compensation for damages from forced occupation of DSI office



BANGKOK: -- The Civil Court today ordered the activist abbot of Wat Or-noi in Nakhon Pathom, Phra Buddha-issara, and four former anti government activists to pay 1.4 million baht in compensation to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for damage caused by their occupation to the DSI building during the anti government protest in 2013-14.

Phra Buddha-issara and four other defendants who were former core members of the defunct People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), Somkiat Wattanawikij, Chumpol Julasai, Nitithorn Lamluek and Anchalee Paireerak were not present to hear the verdict today but were represented by their lawyer.

They were accused by the DSI of leading hundreds of protesters to lay siege to its building on Chaengwattana road from November 2013 to January 2014 in order to prevent officials from working there.

DSI suit said the protesters cut the main power supply, thus causing damage to its computer systems, and its closed-circuit television system.

The DSI then sought Court’s order to demand the five defendants pay 2.6 million baht in compensation.

In today’s hearing of the ruling, the court found all were guilty and ordered the activist monk to pay the DSI 899,203 baht, Chumpol 365,000 baht, and Nitithorn and Ms Anchalee 184,931 baht — a total of 1.449 million baht — plus 7.5% annual interest starting Nov 19, 2014.

Not one baht of his own money will be used to pay any compensation. He is just going to pass his bucket asking his so called followers for donations.

....now wonder if they will ever come to a verdict on the myriad cases....adding up to billions....in courts now.....

That'll get his knickers in a twist. Which of the connected friends will have to pay? Or, more likely as others suggest, another drain on those who probably can't afford it?

That will rip a hole in his alms purse because the evaluation of the expenses for missed worked by the experts was valued at 500 Baht.

This will be appealed to the Supreme Court or Constitutional Court.

In view of the PDRC occupation of the Government House by forced entry in 2014 before the coup was held to be merely freedom of speech by the Constitutional Court with no compensation to the government, I expect the Civil Court decision will be overturned.

As for that other T___D that masqueraded in monk's robe's well as he has friends in high places so I seriously dought he will be paying sweet F/A regardless of the damage done to property or the country, but hey he and his connections have been getting away with it for years and others left to pay the price.

No,no,no,no! Those were all spontaneous donations. Just as all the shopkeepers on the"marching routes " were so overcome with gratitude that they emptied the tills into the sacks carried by the "volunteers" who accompanied the march. All spontaneous donations, and therefore uncounted (and unaccounted for).
