NLA holds education reform seminar

BANGKOK, 25 February 2016 (NNT) – The committee on education and sports of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has held a seminar on education reform.

The seminar’s organizing group was led by Tuang Antachai, Chairman of the NLA’s committee on education and sports. NLA Second Vice President Peerasak Porchit presided over the opening ceremony held at Parliament.

The activity was meant to provide an opportunity to relevant bodies to share their views on education reform for the 21st century, as well as on student skill development.

The seminar also featured an award ceremony for the winners of a short film competition on the role of teachers. The winners were students from Roi Et Rajabhat University and Rajabhat Mahasarakham University.

Yesterday the Newspaper we cannot link to carried a report of a teacher hitting junior matayom pupils about the head, because in the recent cold weather they were dressed " like hill tribe children ". Perhaps the saddest thing was that the child who ( courageously) filmed it, and whose mobile phone video of this sadistic apology for a man was put up on the newspapers website, was quoted as saying that she didn't really think anything would be done about it!

As long as these sort of creatures are allowed to carry on like this then no amount of seminars and film competitions will achieve anything, apart from amusing the participants; who if they really cared about the education of this countries children would be out of their air-conditioned conference centres sorting out this sort of thing. That would be proper reform.

Well said. The disturbing thing is that there are still many many Thai teachers who think they are 'entitled' to take such violent actions.

I have several teachers in my extended Thai family, videos like this start unpleasant discussions:

- The younger teachers are horrified and realize this behavior be teachers is unacceptable and should be punished and more to the point teachers should never be making comments about hilltribe kids or any groups.

- The older teachers, just the opposite.

Another... Although the article only seems to talk about the ceremonial nonsense that comes before anything of (supposed) substance. JAG in an earlier post mentioned the teacher filmed hitting students. The whole sector is in so much of a mess right now that the issue of clouting a bunch of kids around the head is such a non issue that it is not even worthy of a proper discussion. Shambolic really

Interestingly that exactly mirrors my experience/ impression with Thai teachers. Long term the hope must be that the younger generation get to positions of responsibility before they become " corrupted".

Unfortunately I doubt wether anything will change the approach of those in charge currently.

Sadly the child who posted the video is probably right!!

Congratulations to NNT. A seminar was held. Nothing of substance about the seminar was reported. However the names of important organizers were dutifully highlighted.
