Two Ladies Travelling To Phuket-- Kind Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

Im a Singaporean Indian lady & this is my first post here. I wld like to get suggestions and inputs from the kind people here with regards to Phuket.

This December, I will be travelling to Phuket with a female cousin of mine. Since this is my first time there, may I get some ideas on where to go for sightseeing, food. etc? Plus, how's the weather normally, come December? Will it be safe for 2 women to venture out Phuket on our own? My cousin seems to have doubts, so, please tell her, that her fears are unfounded. LOL

Anyone else going to Phuket in the middle of December?

A reply wld be appreciated. Many Thanks!

Phuket is safe but like any holiday destination you should keep your eyes and ears open. Don't get sloshed and lose your sensibilities because people will take advantage of that. (this applies to all genders in case you are wondering)

Weather is quite lovely in Dec. (high season)

Posted

Just come and enjoy your stay here, don't worry :o

With your avatar you'll get a lot of replies from members who are willing to guide you and your cousin.

Have a good time!

THIS IS NOT BRAZIL!!!!

Trust me, you would be fine. Common sense of course. Ask a lot of questions and enjoy yourselves. Thailand, for the most part, is one of the safest countries in the world.

Anything specific you are concerned about?

Hi all,

Thanks for the prompt replies. Of course, I understand there are tons of websites for me to go to, in findin out more about Phuket. However, I would prefer to get personal and first hand experiences of those here..If not, why wld I bother signing up here, aye? :o

Anyway, which beaches are less crowded and great for swimming? Im spoilt for choices!

Merci!

Patong - is a laff. (quite a few all nites out because of Patong :D ) Go have a look, Soi Katoey is a hoot. :o

What else....???? Well might have a look Andaman side if you have the time - quite lovely.

Stick with Khall/Donna - both are STARS and won't lead you down the wrong path. :D

I am a Drilling Engineer and I work in Udon Thani and live in Phuket going on 3 years now. What you can expect to find when you arrive is an airport full of tourists wanting to get to their rooms and relax. Do not let the airport be your first impression of Phuket. As many have though in the past, judging by the people coming into the airport, Phuket is very spread out, and it never seems as crowded as you may think. My personal opinion, having been to every beach on the island, Kata beach is the most friendly. I am American, and I have found that the beaches on the West coast are loaded with Europeans looking for cheap thrills. You will find many people to be experienced with the culture and geography, and some, like yourselves, who are new. Either way, listen to everything people tell you, because not everyone will have the same experience. Most people come to Thailand to find cheap deals and this is what makes it a crazy place. I have to say that the worst place to go is Patong. Patong is not Thailand. It is a long forgotten place full of drunk tourists that have money to burn. You will find that the Thai's that you see here will be geared for profit. They will see you as a way to pay the rent. And you will find that Patong has been taken over by Sex, Alcohol, and Massage parlors. I would go to Patong with the same frame of mind that you would have at your local zoo. Go, look, point, snap pictures, but don't feed the animals, and try not to take them home.

Now, if I were you guys, I would find a nice place down in Kata beach. I can think of a few, but you will want to choose something per your standards. Kata is the beach that seperates the tourist trap of Patong and the more down to earth places such as Rai Wai, Chalong, and the real Phuket. Kata Beach has a low rise to the edge, and no real bad rip tides or currents. I personally recommend it for snorkling. If you travel to the north part of the beach, it has a snorkling area marked off to prevent the typical tourist during his first attempt at Wave Running (jet Skis).

This area has a beautiful reef that is approx: 200 mtrs long, and has thousands of fish and coral to see. Unlike most places in Kata, you can walk there, rent some masks, and dive for free, rather than cram into a mini-bus, with a bunch of lazy tourists, arrive only to take a smaller boat, to some distant place that happens to look exactly the same as Kata.

There are many waterfalls, and sights to see. The best thing to do is rent a moped/motorbike, and take yourself around the island. Sure, you can find a Tuk-Tuk to drive you around, but the adventre of discovering Phuket yourself is one you will remember.

December will be beautiful, and it will be somewhat crowded. Patong in December is like New Orleans on Mardi Gras.

To really experience Phuket the way the local expats do, stay clear of Patong and Karon. But if you insist, be prepared to say no to people hundreds of times per day.

Many people will disagree with what I have to say, and some may even agree. Most people live in Thailand and call it home. I call it home. I work for the King. I am currently drilling a Gas well for him in his private forest. I can assure you, there are many types of expats here, and you will find many good people with a lot of good advice. You will have fun. It is truly a wonderful place, but in the last 3 years, I have never heard of any sort of crime or act of aggression except the ones in the phuket gazette. And that is just media.

Best of luck

Some good advice. I agree that Kata Beach is a great option. The snorkellng and diving off the southern end of Kata Beach has a lot to offer. Also there is a bit of nightlife close by and plenty of inexpensive restaurants - some of them directly on the beach.

I wld very much prefer a beach on the quieter side. After all the hustle and bustle of the city life in Singapore, I gladly welcome a serene retreat..

Most prob I wld be renting a vehicle. This way, I can venture out the various beaches and check em out .

Thanks Brit.

I do appreciate your honesty. Patong was never really on my mind, so thats out.

To think, I have not even gotten a nice place to stay yet. Name me a few places in Kata Beach?

Hoping to meet some nice people in Phuket, so I wont be like a fish out of water there. Haha

Thank you, Hampton for your detailed info on Phuket....BUT:

1. I find your comment in #1 above rather discriminating towards 'Europeans'.

Discrimination is against forum rules !

You wouldn't like it if non-Americans say the same about you or your fellow-americans.

2. 'Most people' come to Thailand for a holiday (NOT for cheap deals!) but there's nothing wrong if they look for 'cheap items/deals' which are more expensive at home.

Don't tell me you order everything from back home, do you?

3. Patong is indeed NOT Thailand; everybody will agree on that. Myself in particular, knowing/remembering 'Patong' as a paradise-beach....empty and unspoiled. And that was long before you came.....and millions of others :o

4. So, Patong is the -only- place where Thai are 'geared' for profit ? They're not on the other beaches or in the rest of Thailand ?

You are not 'geared' for a high salary, allowing you to live a life in paradise ?

Would you be able to live the same life back in the US with your salary/income ?

5. You're right there. People do agree or disagree.

MsZee,

I recently spent some time in Phuket and stayed at Central Kata Beach Resort. Hiring a vehicle is definately the way to go.

In Kata Noi, facing the beach is The Katathani Beach Resort which I would recommend. Another beautiful place to stay would be Mom Tri's especially if you have cash to splash...pure luxury!

Incidentally, I would recommend Mom Tri's Boathouse and Mom Tri's Kitchen for some nice slap up meals.

The hotel I stayed at was nice too but it is family orientated.

Zee, I must admit, this place can get exciting. As I said in my previous reply, listen to everyone you meet or hear from. It is a dynamic place with thousands of different kinds of people from all walks of life. Regardless what they are there for, they are there. And to listen to one man's perspective, would be a mistake. My personal opinion and it worked great for me, is just go, get there, and then figure it out. So many people live there lives planning things out. Some people more than others. Understand, and this is not to offend anyone, but in Thailand, just because you clearly ordered fries with your burger, doesn't mean that they will arrive at the same time, or if ever. Phuket is a place where time doesn't really stand still, but it is at times very slow. It is an island mentality. Unlike the metropolis that is S'Pore, Phuket is a little island that has grown entirely too fast, and seems to have little order. Some of the roads don't even have lines on them. You will see cement trucks driving in the wrong lane, while speeding through a school zone. I am not saying it is a bad thing, but it is, for all intensive purposes a resort island. And it growing so fast that the local engineering firms can't keep up. Just as roads are repaved, they fall apart. Traffic is insane, and sometimes you will witness things that will make you think of how different it is back home. Phuket is a place that is growing so fast. Many people come for vacations, I agree Laopo, but some are actually here serving a purpose other than a vacation. I was invited to come and offer my Petroleum Engineering expertise by the DMF. Some people refer to Phuket as paradise. Phuket is by far not paradise. It is a wonderful vacation getaway where you have to spend more money than usual to have fun. Everything here costs money, and Phuket is very expensive. Don't be fooled.

Like many places in Thailand, the food and culture are prevalent. The thing I love most about Phuket is the commerce. Everyone is working. Some sell sliced watermelon from a refrigerated cart, some sell Spicy homemade (right before your eyes) crab and papaya salad, and there’s even, at times, someone selling photos taken with you holding a gibbon. All in all, it is wonderful because everyone works, and takes pride in their work. Thai people are wonderful people. But, the reason I said what I said about Patong and the Thais geared for profit was this:

I have lived here for 3 years and the Thai's that own the restaurant by my house, know that at or around 8am, I am coming for breakfast. They know me; remember my name and how hot I like my soup. The Thai's in Patong, are forced to deal with tourists everyday, and their minds are geared for it. They know enough English to do business, but will never invite you to come home with them for a barbecue. The side of the island where I live are where Thai's are busy about their day, mingling and doing business with other Thai's. Regardless of the tourists a half an hour away.

My intention is not to offend anyone or to discriminate. I would just suggest you visit some quiet places on the island, to really experience the personality and culture that is truly Thailand. I sound like a travel brochure. Kata is a quiet beach, and has everything that Patong does. As a lady, I assume you will not be interested in the Red Light type of nights out, but if you are, you will find that in Patong. In Kata, you will find peace and quiet. I recommend the following hotels:

http://www.farangs.com/serene-resort.htm

http://www.farangs.com/peach-hill-hotel-resort.htm

http://www.farangs.com/baan-karonburi-resort.htm *****

The Baan Karon Buri is where I stayed while my house was being remodeled. This is where I would recommend because of location, it is away from the crowded areas, and it has a restaurant and Tuk-Tuk (taxi) stand near by.

Patong by day is wonderful for shopping.

Remember these phrases and you will get along nicely:

Sa-waddee-Ka - Hello

korp-Khun-ka - Thank you

Mai Aow- ka I don't Want

Hong Nam yoh-tee-nai - where is the toilet

As for Laopo,

____________________________________________________________________________

4. So, Patong is the -only- place where Thai are 'geared' for profit ? They're not on the other beaches or in the rest of Thailand ?

You are not 'geared' for a high salary, allowing you to live a life in paradise ?

Would you be able to live the same life back in the US with your salary/income ?

___________________________________________________________________

If I may answer: 1.) Everyone discriminates against Americans. I am used to it. I don't care if you discriminate against me. Some people even say the Tsunami was or fault, and think we should be sued. That doesn’t make it so. Your opinion is yours, please voice it. I did not mean to generalize that only Europeans are here for cheap thrills. I apologize if I offended you.

I am geared for a high salary because I work hard and I am good at what I do. I do not live in Paradise. Phuket is far from Paradise. We have a dog problem beyond belief. The fact that Thais neglect dogs is disgusting. Paradise is not having to wait for 23 days to have something done. Traffic, lineless roads, higher prices for farangs, discrimination against farangs by thais, higher fines for farangs, no property ownership, visa restrictions, rudeness, I could go on and on. This is by no means paradise. The fact that Phuket is an Island in the Andaman is great, but don't be fooled into thinking it is the greatest. I love Phuket for what it is. I pay a lot of money to the Thai government in TAXES to live here. I bet I pay more than most Thais. But I CHOOSE to live here because I have found a love for the place that I never found in America. And it ain't cheap.

On my salary and or income, I would live at home better than I do here. Paved roads with advanced engineering and construction, lanes on the roads, traffic signals, enforced traffic laws, same price for everyone, you get what is advertised. Believe me, many Thai's live in my home town in America. I have never seen them get treated the way I do in Thailand, by Thai people.

By all means, I am here by choice, and I am happy to remain. But don't call it paradise. Paradise is never having to carry a wallet. :o

Zee, have fun, and let me know if you want a tour guide. My wife and I would gladly show you a few nice spots for dinner and scenery.

best of luck,

Hampton

Personally I think Nai Harn is the prettiest and possibly one of the most relaxing beaches on the island.

The view point bars between kata and nai harn hill road is a good place to stop for a PHUKET ISLAND TEA - superb view over there. :o
