Bob Dylan announces new album, tour dates
Maeve McDermott

NEW YORK: -- Bob Dylan is back on the road this summer with a new album and tour.

The new collection of songs, titled Fallen Angels, will be the 74-year-old singer's 37th studio album. A release date is forthcoming.

Dylan will support the new album with a 27-date summer world tour with Mavis Staples, which arrives in the U.S. on June 4 after a string of shows in Japan.

I've been to half a dozen Dylan concerts since the early seventies, and after the last one I said "never again". His voice has deteriorated that much (though the band is still fantastic). But for the chance to see Mavis Staples I might just do it again. I hope they're coming near my town.

Yes, I also thought he had died about 10 years ago. But if people will still buy his music; then why not make the records.

The Rolling Stones are still going strong; also in their 70"s.

I won't get drawn into the he can't sing for toffee arguments, that is backed up by his touring schedule and continuous studio work.

Keep on keeping on Bob.

The last thing he did that impressed me was the "Blood on the Tracks" album released in 1975.

Since then nothing he has done is very interesting ( to me).

I agree that he is a legend as a songwriter and a poet.

He changed music for the better.

But Mr. Zimmerman is 74 years old now and should just relax.

I imagine he does not need more money at this point in his life.

Just bow out gracefully Bob.

And thanks for what you gave us.

but let us remember the great stuff you gave us in the 60s and 70s........we will try to forget the makeup years.

Anyone remember the "Paul is dead" thing from 1969?

A few months later Dylan gave his first interview since the motorcycle crash three years before, to Rolling Stone magazine. Whenever asked about certain songs he had written he kept saying "did I write that? I don't recall." I think he was just being a smart ass. But at the same time Nashville Skyline had just been released, which along with John Wesley Harding had me thinking "what the f --- ?" At the same time The Band put out their first album, and I didn't get what all the fuss was about except that "whoa, this is Dylan's backup band, heavy stuff!" As far as I was concerned the guy who made "Blonde on Blonde" and the Highway 61 album was gone. Well, the Paul thing was completely loopy, and I would add to it by telling people it was really Dylan that was dead from the motorcycle crash and all those clues the Beatles conveyed were really an homage to Dylan; of course I wasn't serious but there were people coming out with crazier theories that some thought were valid. Even people like our parents, blue-collar workers who wouldn't know a Beatles song from a Stones' song were coming up with dead Paul theories they 'heard.' There were special shows on TV where they played songs backwards and such looking for more clues. Fun times!

Anyway, with the exception of a few cuts from Blood on the Tracks that was it for me and Mr D's music. He was at his best (IMO) when he was spitting venom, like Idiot Wind and Positively 4th Street.

Sorry for the rambling, this is probably my first time thinking back on the 'Paul is dead' goofiness since it happened.

Blood on the tracks was a fantastic album.

But the original New York recordings were far superior to the official Columbia release.

As is often the case with Dylan.

Saw Bob in Sheffield about 8 years ago, sadly his voice was not good. But I can always say I saw the legend and still get pleasure from listening to his songs.

I was there at the Hallam FM arena.

What did you think of his voice, it sounded very croaky to me?

One of the best days of my life was in 1984 on a very hot day in July at Wembley Stadium. Bob Dylan along with many top supporting artist sung for many hours. Bob was on top form and sung all of his top songs in an amazing atmosphere to a crowd of 72,000.
