Can somebody please advise on this?

Older iMac with Snow Leopard completely messed up and stuck and no easy way out. It started with attaching a photo to an email, might have clicked something wrong and it accidentally started to move 60GB of photos to the desktop, at this point it got stuck. On the desktop is a file overloaded with corrupted photo files and sometimes all files and icons are gone.

Can only close the machine via a forced stop. Apple+Escape opens it's menu, trying to force-close all processes results in a total block. How to get beyond this, anyone?

Try a restart. If you can't do it using the menu item, reach behind and hold the power button. That should force it to shut down; then hold the power button again to restart. That might give you a head start on cleaning up whatever got messed up on your desktop.

I am no expert.

But when A Mac has a silly, IMHO the only solution is to do as above. Turn off and then Turn on.

Experts might know better.
