After being in Thailand for 10 years I plan on going back to Canada and staying there for 6 months every year and then returning back to Thailand. I am married and will get a Non O Visa and was thinking that I would get it for 3 months and then applying for the extension on a Marriage after 60 days with a multiple entry Visa thereby not having to go to a Consulate every year. I am leaving in April and my extension of stay finishes in July and it will be cancelled when I leave the country. I will arrive back in Thailand in October 2016 and could go to Immigration in January 2017 to apply for the extension of stay based on Marriage and get a multiple entry and then renew it on my return. Would this be the best way to do this in order to avoid going to a consulate every year? I do not have enough funds for a Retirement Visa. Also would I need a return ticket to Canada after getting the Non O in 2016 as I would like to get the return ticket to Thailand in April of 2017. Thank you for your help.

You might consider an extension each year, just arrange it to be renewed when you're in Thailand for the winter. Saves a lot of hassle with embassies etc. If you're over 50 the retirement extension is less paperwork than the marriage extension, especially if done using the income method.

Edited to add -- Timing the annual renewal of your visa extension to coincide with your planned time in Thailand is what it's all about. Presuming you are on a marriage extension already, you might want to see if that can be done.

He is on an extension based upon marriage now but the month it is due does not work for his planned 6 months out of the country so he going to change the date the extension is due by entering on a non-o visa and applying for a new extension.

Got it now - thanks -- it's a bit early for my old brains ;)

As a matter of interest - has anyone ever managed to persuade an immigration office to move the renewal date of an extension forward in cases like this? I'm lucky and purely by chance my renewal fits neatly into the middle of my spell in Thailand each year, but I can see how the OP's situation can arise.

I never seen a report of immigration ever doing an extension early or making it shorter to change the date the annual extension is due.

The only way to do it is to leave without a re-entry permit, get a new visa and apply for a new extension or be out of the country when the extension is due and enter with a new visa.
